Reading again the essay by Walter Noll, The Role of the Professor. He "lives" his subject and cannot easily switch it off, even while lying in bed awake or on vacation. He recreates the subject in his mind each time he lectures on it. math.cmu.edu/~wn0g/RP.pdf

Fracture mechanics is an idealization. Central to this idealization is energy release rate, defined using an ideal body in which a crack is stationary and deformation is elastic, and applied to a real body in which a crack grows by a localized irreversible process.
