@Dennis_W_Wise Thank you! I was shortlisted for a tenure-track position, did the campus-visit, & heard back today that I didn't get it. I know it's competitive but feeling pretty devastated tbh, especially since I never see t-t positions in my area (animal studies) in Canada.

@monisousa93 Sorry to hear that. I've never had an alt-ac job after PhD .... although I've never had a permanent job, either. British academic is even worse than us over here, so really sorry about your sad news.

Would any English instructors/professors here be wiling to share a sample of a "research statement" they have written in the past for prof. job applications? I have never had to write one before and would love a strong sample for inspiration/guidance!

For example, I am very recently done my PhD and this semester I'm working at a university as a sessional instructor, but I have no idea yet if I'll be working there next semester. Does it make more sense to list myself as an independent scholar? Or just list the university?

@Dennis_W_Wise It's true, it did take me a long time to read it since it's such a chonker! It was one of my fave reads of 2022 though. Loved the characters, the relationships, the world building, the captivating prose, the DRAGONS!

@monisousa93 Glad to see you like it as well. Been debating on whether I should read it, but the worst part about being an academic is that now I get REAL grumpy about 800 page novels!

In my fantasy fiction class, I took a poll on my students' favorite fantasy novels ... out of 30 students with three votes apiece, here's what we got ... and Tolkien's still the king. ;)
