You’re going to want to sit down for this one, because it’ll come as a big shock, but: they mean “drive out the people who live in southern Lebanon, demolish the existing towns and cities then replace them with a million crank psycho settlers”.

@monkeybr0ther I think there's a difference between people who feel national pride, and ultranationalists. Again the point is simply that national sentiment exists as a social phonomenon, and so if it is opposed on principle by progressive forces, it will be exploited by reactionary ones

National nihilism is such a cancerous force. It masquerades insidiously as a reasonable analytical position. But in truth, in the real world where feelings of national pride exist regardless of any pseudo-intellectual self-righteous rejections of it, it is incredibly hindering

@DomLeeScott @gem_ste I refuse to accept the premise that selling a single slave is equivalent to shipping off thousands of them. I said not "everybody was doing it", and you gave one other large-scale example. Okay - that still leaves all the other countries. Japan, China, Vietnam...

@monkeybr0ther @gem_ste … irrelevant if we are talking about the moral argument. The moral argument is whether or not you believe enslaving other humans should be allowed or not. Slavery and human sacrifice of slaves were normal in Africa long before Europeans showed up.

A British student can’t get an NHS dentist. A British family can’t get a council house. But a Gaza student can use the ECHR to drag her whole family here because it would be ‘unjustifiably harsh’ not to. The only people our courts think don’t have rights are the British.

The European Union is waking up to news that the Iranian regime has missiles that can reach the whole of Western Europe. It should say THANK YOU to the United States and Israel for destroying Iran’s nuclear weapons program and obliterating its ballistic missile industry.

@caffeine_me_now I don't really see how patriotism, as it is practiced in the UK, can be used for a progressive ends. Patriots tend to be hostile to any assertion of wrongdoing by their country, and such a reckoning is necessary in the imperial core.

@monkeybr0ther I think there's a meaningful distinction between not feeling national pride, and rejecting its validity outright and subsequently alienating a large proportion of the working class. The danger is that if you reject the patriotism of the masses, reactionaries will use it instead

Transphobes will tell you your identity can't be defined by a vague feeling, and then wax lyrical about what it means to be "British"

Too many people are too polite to say this. But mass rituals in public places is an act of domination. The druids are taking over.

Dear Sadiq Khan, I think some of the prejudice to do with 'singling out Muslims' is to to with their stated intention to kill 'infidels', expecially the bit about beheading them You see, the other religions don't promise that
Sadiq Khan@SadiqKhan

British values mean defending everyone’s right to practise their faith freely. In London, I’m proud Christians, Jews, Hindus, Sikhs, Muslims and others can celebrate in Trafalgar Square. Singling out Muslims isn’t ‘British values’ - it’s prejudice. mirror.co.uk/news/politics/…

@huggan_anas @LeeAndersonMP_ Because islamophobia often presents as racism. Sikhs & Hindus are often attacked out of hatred of Islam. These ignorant fucks don't stop to ask. Christianity-related terrorism has been responsible for nearly 30 times as many deaths as Islam in the UK since 1970. And yet...👀

@monkeybr0ther @gem_ste So most people in the UK today are descendants of the anti slavery masses, very few are descended from those who directly participated in the trade. It's really that simple

@monkeybr0ther @gem_ste No, they don’t. They just know everyone else was doing it so we shouldn’t be singled out for specific blame for something that has gone on throughout the history of humanity.

@gem_ste You are British, so your job is to confront Britain's involvement in slavery, not whatever your Bogeyman country is. Furthermore, slavery on the scale of the transatlantic slave trade is not some historical inevitability, and plenty of countries never did anything like it. (2/2)

@gem_ste The replies are being carpet-bombed with Whataboutisms, so I'll just say this: the fact that other countries partook in slavery does not absolve you of that crime. Pointing fingers is just a pathetic way of failing to own up to your own responsibilities. (1/2)
