@oldandrewuk @MsJasmineMN The bigger issue is why he could legally go to the scene of a riot openly carrying an assault weapon. Jasmin, Andrew and I thankfully live in countries where that is not even remotely possible to do legally. This is the wicked problem the US won’t be able to solve.

@MsJasmineMN Yes, he sought out situation where he might be able to *legally* kill people. That does seem to cross a moral line. And it raises questions about the laws that make this possible. But the courts only get to decide if laws are broken.

@Miss_Snuffy @2Markdavid When a measure becomes a target it ceases to be and effective measure. We see this often in education.

Well actually I think the very existence of an inspectorate means schools can try to please instead of doing what’s right in the moment. It undermines real thinking. No one’s fault. Just what happens. But too complex to explain in a tweet really.

@JaneFCSupport They are born undisciplined. We scocialize them into a culture which involves rules and social norms. Hardly a controversial concept.

@AlanTudgeMP I’d like school to teach critical thinking skills and an honest accounting of world history- all 60k years of it, and prehistory, sciences, mathematics and literature. I’d like our future generations prepared to deal with the mess today’s leaders are leaving them with.

@monkrob @StuartM21825168 @Quillette You could start with Who We Are and How We Got Here by David Reich. The author is one of the worlds leading geneticists. Warning though it is one of those books that hurts peoples feelings.

@Quillette GGS is an old mans creative musings about the world. It's a lot of fun to read, but really short on credibility.

Simplified. Not simplistic. A schematic model. Not a literal description. Nuanced. Not reductive. A basis for discussion. Not a rigid set of rules.

@Trivium21c @ShakinthatChalk The discourse in education is semi scientific. Some apply rigorous falsification to educational interventions in the hope it will reveal their efficacy, while others suggest this scientific approach is not appropriate in education. It’s a strange game we play.

@monkrob @ShakinthatChalk Cognitive science has a huge chunk of computational thinking about the brain at its core… and yet that blog by a ‘cognitive scientist’ derides a theory because he says it uses computer as a metaphor (which others deny in this instance)

You know what is missing from these tips? How to engage parents & caregivers in the process of literacy learning. These tips seem based on the idea that if you surround a child with books then they will learn to read. Surrounding a child with water won't teach them to swim!
