@gabrielzthorn it could be argued that touhou project does this well. the "visual novel sections" are very short bursts of dialogue between characters that tell you story and don't interrupt gameplay too much for those interested more in the gameplay to just skip through. that's a stretch tho.

@gabrielzthorn difficulty of the game itself. i think for something like this to be fully realized that the gameplay must affect the story in a meaningful way. i'm not sure how this would work and that creates another problem, but yeah. it's a very interesting idea but it feels like a novelty.

arcade games and visual novels are on two opposite ends of the spectrum of gameplay to story and that's why they're both great for being two extremes that don't have to make concessions to appeal to non-fans. games have a big problem now where they want to make themself as-

@NewFranKK @monokudos i love how the story in the prime trilogy is shown through analyzing the environment yourself! i only got through 3 recently but the first 2 have been very important to me for my whole life. i like how the story and interacting with sentients become a bigger part of it

@NewFranKK games that use the gameplay as a narrative tool are so fucking cool when done well i haven't played it but like drakengard or drag-on dragoon whatever you wanna call it seems to do this very well!

@monokudos I wonder if that’s why I love RPGs and games that really put narrative and gameplay together And why I have such a hard time with platformers that try to go too hard on the story (or metriodvanias that aren’t castlevania, basically indie ones)

@NewFranKK @monokudos i love metroid fusion for how its story allows for unique and stressful situations that arent possible in a typical metroid game. it would not be the same game or as scary without all of the text and setup. even prime scans cant do that but those are amazing in their own way
