If Starmer had just done Swinnyism across the rUK he could have had polls like Swinny (another very boring man) - and that was what he was elected to do! Instead, he chose (was pushed down?) the path of Mandelson/McSweeny/Blair, and here we are.

SNP success is accounted for entirely by not fucking up. They inherited Brownite New Labour domestic policy and left it entirely unchanged. Innovated in no way in any sector but refused to do Toryism or whatever Starmer is up to and are reaping the rewards.

Forgot to mention an important fact of omission. UAE is completely excluded from the diplomacy, along with Israel. We can read this as evidence of the Saudi-Emirati confrontation reemerging due to their divergence on Iran policy once it became obvious that the Iranians had this in the bag. The entire Islamabad show must be making Abu Dhabi furious and fearful. They’re on the menu.
Policy Tensor@policytensor

As we work towards the Islamabad Accord, a natural question arises: what explains the central role that Pakistan is playing? Pakistan leads the quartet with Saudi, Turkey and Egypt. Of all these powers, Pakistan is closest to China. And it is through Chinese intervention that the quartet have been able to bring Iran in. On the other side, of all these powers, Pakistan is also closest to the Trump White House. It seems to have been instrumental in bringing JD in, and make other concessions up front like the release of frozen funds. Pakistan is also closest to the Saudis, who are really the diving force behind the quartet diplomacy. It’s not quite right to say that Pakistan is acting as an agent of the Saudis. Perhaps one can say that they partially represent the Saudis while also serving as the neutral convening party. This suits everyone just fine except the Israelis who want to fight the war to the last American JASSM. The Israelis are also alarmed at the quartet itself. Bennett made it very clear that this four Sunni power axis is directed at Israel. And they are not wrong. It is a counter-balancing coalition against Israel masquerading as a counter-balancing coalition again Iran. We will learn a lot more later on about the exact role-playing here. What did the Chinese offer to the Iranians to get on board? What was on the quartet agenda re Israel? Do the Saudis want a hard bargain or a sort bargain with Iran? And is Russia standing behind Iran? TBD.

@Empty_America But, many New England WASPs were Congregationalists, as well, which was not High Church. Also, High Church Episcopalianism didn’t become common until the Anglo-Catholic revival movement in the mid-late Victorian era.

The other thing to understand is that the "P" in WASP didn't mean what you might think. They had zero cultural relationship with anything like modern evangelicalism, southern Baptists, etc. Especially in NYC, many were attending very high Episcopal Churches, like this:

Been reading a lot of old books satirizing traditional WASP culture and I would love for someone smart to explain to me why Catholicism became the aspirational right wing trad country club aesthetic instead of Protestantism…? 🤔

@lmartods How on earth can these guys complain about a lack of stable budgets from Congress? Beginning to wonder if the US is suffering not just from wasteful private sector contracts and revolving door but old fashioned money-missing officer corruption.

@WilliamHogeland Yes, unlike post war US heyday of psychoanalysis, insurance is now reluctant to pay for psychoanalytic psychotherapy. Lots of reasons why it fell out of favour, mostly not smart, as you say, but patients don’t get psychoanalysis to the extent they might have because of insurance.

This exactly what I was getting at the other day about who is subordinate to who (government, capital, military etc) and how that defines a system more than if "markets" are present (they're always present in every system).

@SamoBurja @mattyryze Cut off genocidal Israel and offer genuine concessions to Iran which reintegrate it into the world economy. Doubling down on this war is morally wrong and strategically foolish. There is no “winning” it.

This might be a long war. If it is a long war the United States should try to win it. The prerequisite for winning it is similar to what would be needed to win a war against China: Complete military reform, drone manufacturing capacity, energy resilience. Let's go.
