‘Pennine Scene - Gate with a Sheep’ seems almost to be a Peter Brook painting of a selection of his favourite motifs, the curious ovine drawing the eye to the misshapen tree and up along the broken-down wall to the abandoned farmhouse with its long-since redundant telegraph pole.

Interesting to see English-speaking Muslims using broken plurals for even relatively assimilated Arabic loanwords. Information about analogous usage of Hebrew among Jews suggests there’s probably a complex array of variables, varying by community and individual, that influences whether one talks about sheikhs or shuyookh, amirs or umara, faqihs or fuqaha in any given context.
I wonder if someone has actually done any sociolinguistic studies of if though.

@chacon @cherrysberries To be fair, you can gain the missing key to the university even as an adult. There are evening schools for that; takes about 2 years. Didn’t use to be the case, but now the system has become relatively flexible.

@cherrysberries Prob the tracking system, where only a small percentage of kids are tracked into Gymnasium and thus even able to attempt to get into University. It’s not about affordability, its that Germany tells 70% of their children they will never go to college when they’re like 10.

twitter no longer lets you view tweets without an account. all archival tools don't work anymore. unauthenticated downloaders/clients/tools/etc also no longer work. this was probably done to stop unpaid data scraping, but ended up hurting literally everyone else.

Today my German classmates had a conversation about how strange it is when other cultures use terms of endearment (like sweetheart, darling, etc) with people they hardly know. I feel like it was the most German conversation I’ve ever heard 😂 Is it normal where you’re from?
