@aztrailrunr @usatf Or maybe advocacy works! Can you see the flaw in your logic? "If anything good happens, then it was going to happen no matter what people said or did." The system responded to pressure. And good people worked behind the scenes to make it happen.

@MountainRoche @usatf @MountainRoche it’s too bad you couldn’t bring yourself to admit you jumped the gun hammering and calling out @usatf when it turned out to be an officer in distress call that created the chaos.

AMAZING NEWS! @usatf stepped up and is trying to make things right after the unfortunate mistake at the US Half Marathon Champs. Their statement has enough words to finish the next Game of Thrones book, so here’s the summary. We get to celebrate 2 podiums and 2 national champions! Jess McClain is NATIONAL CHAMPION, along with Molly Born 🇺🇸🏆 Emma Grace Hurley and Ednah Kurgat both win silver medals, along with Carrie Ellwood 🥈 Annie Rodenfels has bronze all by herself, like the boss she is 🥉 All athletes get their money from Atlanta Track Club (ATC was incredible all week). Team USA is TBD but I think we can be confident that things are moving in the right direction. Thank you to the Long Distance Committee at USATF for being wonderful over the last few days, especially Kim Conley and Jay Holder 🙏 You two give me a lot more hope for humanity. And hey—not many people would remember the US half championship in 10 years. But no one will ever forget 2026 😂 Instead, we got to see female athlete ICONS BEING ICONIC both during and after the race. The moments and PRs aren’t coming back. But these women will be icons forever 🔥 A bunch of people have some new heroes. I know I do. Now, back to running 😂

Some more footage of the missed turn at the USATF Half Marathon Championship in Atlanta at the intersection of Nelson Street and Ted Turner Drive. Jess McClain is clearly just following the lead vehicle, like anyone would in her position. All the "you should know/memorize the course if you're a pro" discourse is ridiculous.
Chris Chavez@ChrisChavez

What a weekend! We had a lead vehicle drive the top women off course at the USATF Half Marathon Championships with World Road Running Championship spots on the line. We sort through that mess and consider what could happen next. Oh! And the biggest performances at the USATF Indoor Championships! 🎧 SPOTIFY: open.spotify.com/episode/1RxqMG… 🎧 APPLE PODCASTS: podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/thi…

Our agency had the second and third-place finishers at the USATF Half Marathon Championships yesterday, Carrie Ellwood and Annie Rodenfels, respectively. I am gutted for the athletes impacted by the on-course mishap and for the Atlanta Track Club team. I also understand the precarious position this places USATF, given their published selection criteria for the World Athletics Road Running Championships in Copenhagen this September. The USATF selection procedures state that the top three finishers at the National Championships will earn automatic selection to the World Championships, with one additional at-large spot going to the top-ranked athlete in the World Athletics global rankings (full criteria below). Should any athlete on the podium decline, USATF will then fill those spots by order of finish, up to the fifth position. Earlier today, I had conversations with both Carrie and Annie. Both athletes prefer that the rightful team of Jess McClain, Emma Grace Hurley, and Ednah Kurgat be named to the team representing the Stars & Stripes, as it was a foregone conclusion that they had the team spots locked up, given their lead and proximity to the finish. I’ve had conversations with USATF today as well and understand by selecting those three they would be going against their selection criteria, as Jess (ninth), Emma (twelfth), and Ednah (thirteenth) finished outside the top-five designation. There is the spirit of the law and the letter of the law. The spirit of the selection criteria is to send the strongest possible team to the global championships, that spirit should win out here. Doing the right thing matters, and as a former athlete who has been on both sides of lead vehicle snafus—as the beneficiary (New Haven, 2000), and as the punished (Air Force Marathon 13.1, 2011)—I understand what the athletes are going through now. This is an opportunity for USATF to name Jess, Emma, and Ednah to Team USA. Should any of them decline, Carrie and Annie would happily step in, be ready roll, and do our country proud. 🇺🇸 I want to thank USATF for making this such a priority at this time. They're working hard on a solution, and I'm sure we’ll have one in short order. (Photo: Annie and Carrie in a gratuitous post-race doping control shot #CleanSport)

The solution for the disaster at the @usatf Half Champs where the top 3 athletes were directed off course by a motorcade of official vehicles: 1. Have 2 full podiums for National Championship honors (necessary for bonuses and future opportunities) 2. Send the 3 athletes directed off-course to the World Champs 3. Full prize money for all 6 athletes If USATF fails to act on behalf of athletes, the leadership has to change 🙏

@jaybjackson It was 3 cars, including race officials. 2nd place who also made the turn is from Atlanta, trains on the course, and was 2nd last year. No one would have disobeyed officials. This wasn't some backyard race with a bike. It was a motorcade basically.

Look the officials screwed up.. no doubt.. but it was her responsibility to know the course.. she clearly didn’t and if she knew the course no matter what the motorcycle does she goes the the route given at the Pre race meeting in made available to her. It’s unfortunate but a good lesson for all athletes especially professionals.. know the course

This is Jess McClain absolutely FLYING just over a mile from the finish, on her way to winning the US Half Marathon Championships. Jess is the best person, and I know thousands of fans were crying with joy like we were as she made the move 🙏🇺🇸 But things didn’t unfold that way. Right around this moment, the lead car made a wrong turn. On the broadcast, you can see flaggers and police cars rubber-stamping the turns too. Jess did what any athlete would do—you follow direction from officials (and the camera that is broadcasting the event). The top 3 athletes lost a few minutes, and with it spots on the US team for the world champs, a national championships podium, and big prize money/bonuses (at least as I’m writing this now). If that stands, it is NOT ACCEPTABLE. @usatf and Atlanta Track Club (the event hosts), MAKE THIS RIGHT. Don’t hide behind rule books designed for when there weren’t cameras and lead cars showing the athletes where to run. At the very least, give both podiums the full prize money, and figure out a way to express in the results that this was your unintentional screw-up, and not on any of the athletes. Most importantly, all of these women (including Molly Born, a total beast who crossed the finish line first) are so incredible. It’s time for USATF to think outside of the box and make this right for everyone. Let’s make this a funny story, rather than a sad one 🙏 Jess, we are so so proud of you 😭🦖

Every athlete who would ever be in this situation would want you to provide the athletes with an additional podium and prize money. Tens of thousands of dollars are on the line, along with the credibility of your entire organization. Do you stand for athletes, or do you stand for yourselves? We are about to find out the answer to that question. If USATF fails to act on behalf of athletes, the leadership has to change.

AN ABSOLUTE DISGRACE. Today at the US Half Marathon Champs, Jess McClain and the 3 leaders were directed off course by the lead car and officials in the final mile (all on video for anyone to see). @usatf has initially announced that they won’t be making it right and rectifying the incompetence that created this situation. USATF, there is still time to change course. Every athlete who would ever be in this situation would want you to provide the athletes with an additional podium and prize money. Tens of thousands of dollars are on the line, plus a US team, along with the credibility of your entire organization. Do you stand for athletes, or do you stand for yourselves? We are about to find out the answer to that question. If USATF fails to act on behalf of athletes, the leadership has to change. What comes next? It’s a Sunday, and maybe this decision was made by a local official who just made a mistake. If action isn’t taken, the athletes, coaches, and fans must use our platforms to make sure the leadership changes. Make this right, and we can all celebrate, laughing at an unfortunate situation, and uplifting an organization that stands with athletes 🇺🇸🙏

@BillOzanne They aren't fake winners--they did everything right. USATF will make this right and award 2 podiums and prize purses! We'll see on the Worlds team. The outrage will be too much for USATF and ATC to ignore.

It's unpopular because it's the most trash take of all time. You listen to officials directing you on the course. Every athlete who has ever been in this position would disagree with you, because you are wildly wrong.

@CitiusMag I know this is definitely an unpopular opinion, but it is up to the athletes to know the course

CHAOS IN ATLANTA 😵‍💫 With under 2 miles to go, Jess McClain led the 2026 U.S. Half Marathon Championships by a good margin and looked well on her way to a national title… until the lead bike led her, Emma Grace Hurley, and Edna Kurgat off course. Molly Born, who was over a minute behind, is the first runner to correctly complete the course and is credited with the win in 69:43, but multiple protests are expected. Carrie Ellwood (69:47) and Annie Rodenfels (1:10:12) finished second and third. This race serves as a selection event for the 2026 World Road Running Championships, which further complicates matters for this zany outcome.

Thank you! I talked many times about the experiments that I theorize didn't work, particularly the extreme heat suit, and how that likely affected sweat rates/electrolyte balance. Either way, I'm just N=1, a coach who has made himself into a contender by applying evidence-based lessons. More importantly, I share all of those coaching lessons from working with pros who are way better than I am on roads and trails🙏 Cool if I'm not for you!

@MountainRoche @Cdenejnjendjen @SageCanaday I hope you did learn some things! What got to me was that you framed that race as a science experiment around the heat suit and then chose not to use a scientific method after your race. Trust, it was nothing personal. I enjoyed your show but prefer an evidence-based cast.

Yeah no. I’ve trained at 100miles a week & can certainly gain (unwanted) body fat & be in a calorie surplus. Eating quality food is important. But I’ve certainly had too much “junk food” and it’s easy to gain weight even running this amount. You actually “can’t outrun a bad diet”
Diane Brander@DiBrander

From past experience, you CAN outrun a bad diet. If you're running 40+ miles a week, no amount of food is enough. It's not overeating, it's fueling an active lifestyle. But, the moment you stop putting in the high miles, and you don't stop eating like a racehorse, those excess calories will slam into you and stick like fatty glue.

@D_Polta @Cdenejnjendjen @SageCanaday Thanks so much for trying it Dan! The female listener was doing 15-20 hours of training and not fueling her training. And I went from DNF to being voted #4 Ultrarunner of the Year, so I learned some things 🙏 Totally respect if I'm not for you! And I wish you the best always.

@Cdenejnjendjen @SageCanaday @MountainRoche Stopped listening to SWAP after David refused to learn anything from his "science experiment" at WSER. Decided to give it a try again, and David and Megan told a listener to try eating more food instead of using a GLP-1, which is just unlicensed medical practice. Unfollowed again
