@HenryBushnell Feels like I might have been one of those ECNL parents cited! Good piece. The US youth sports landscape is a problem and no one is doing more to solve it than Tom Ferry. It's also not why we lost that game, but that's a conversation for another day!

Lots of youth soccer discourse in the aftermath of the USMNT's World Cup exit. So, I wrote about "pay-to-play" — what it actually is, why it's a problem, why it's different in the U.S. vs. elsewhere, and why the real issue is "pay-to-travel-and-play": nytimes.com/athletic/74357…

@mpjones1 The USA is the current Olympic champion in men’s and women’s hockey, and the current Stanley Cup holder in Carolina.

"The youth system is broken" except virtually none of the guys on the men's team went thru the system that is being talked about, and nearly every member of the USWNT did. Rec to ECNL/GA to college/pro. Girls and women paving their way just fine. I've been a pay-to-play participant (daughter...ECNL to college). It's brutal and no DOUBT shuts way too many out. That sucks and is too true for so much of what happens to American youth (sports or not). But give me a break with it being the reason our men folded (again). Knock-out tournaments are hard. Narratives and momentum matter. I don't have the answers, but the "system" ain't it.

@mpjones1 Where the US has sporting success it's either financially doped or in sports nobody really plays, football is about culture and as for the US womens team they are no longer the best because of the European footballing pyramid has turned up.

@bigbooty_TD @poena_cullei I can't believe I'm responding, but we are the reigning Olympic Champions and seemingly half the team are new moms. You're an idiot.

Me: I’ve finished my World Cup commentary duties here in Dallas and need to rest my brain and go for a walk. Me checking FotMob: there are 4 matches today across World Cup and @NWSL. I’ll watch them all back to back.

“As we know, the English historically struggle here in Massachusetts.” Such a casually brilliant line. 😂

I obviously don't know enough about how FIFA went about scheduling this World Cup to give anyone credit. But these match days w/ Messi, Mbappe and Haaland all playing (and scoring) is AWESOME. We see it every big tournament...the greats just respond differently. What a day.
