An update on journalist @NoaAvishag, who was reporting for Drop Site News aboard the Freedom Flotilla Coalition ship Handala before being unlawfully detained by Israel. Historian William Dalrymple, a friend of Noa’s, says that while zip-tied in Israeli custody, Avishag shouted directly at Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir, calling him a “genocidal maniac” to his face. Despite inheriting a budget gap larger than during the Great Recession, the aim wasn’t just deficit reduction. Savings were reinvested into affordability: childcare, cheaper groceries, safer streets and trash containerisation, while strengthening libraries and parks.

@ZohranKMamdani New York’s lesson is also how savings were achieved. It wasn’t austerity alone: Albany support + new revenue from taxing luxury assets and high-income tax benefits, while agencies were pushed to scrutinise budgets, reduce unnecessary overtime, improve contracts and cut waste.
