Exceptional writing in this ad for Forest Essentials, by the agency Talented! Before I even get to the crux, I couldn't help marvel at the minor nuance thrown in - the daughter-in-law (Arjun's wife; we don't hear her name, but she is addressed with a lot of love as 'beta' and 'bachche'/'child') first calls her 'Aunty' and then 'Sorry... mummy', signifying that she's newly married and is still adjusting to the new home's rhythm. It's a small, almost fleeting detail, but it is lived-in details like this that add a rich texture to any writing. And then the crux: "Is it efficient to keep yourself on hold?" lands so beautifully - not as a talk-down from the mother-in-law, but as a genuine question worth asking. And it seems to come from—again, 'lived-in'—experience! The context the mother-in-law gives from her own life is not some high-funda logic. It is a remarkably simple and relatable anecdote. The closure is pure gold: 'Kabhi kabhi, hum kyun bhool jaate hain ki hum par hamaari khud ki bhi toh zimmedaari hai?' (Why do we often forget that we have a responsibility towards our own selves?). The only minor quibble that sprang up spontaneously while I watched the ad for the first time was that the tea-related anecdote makes the ad look like a tea brand's ad! The anecdote, combined with the last shot where they are both seen enjoying their cup of hot tea, that is! And guess what? Remembering Amma (my late Bua), Dr (Mrs) D Singh of Patna, who passed away 14 years ago today, after living a life one dreams of. She was much older than my father, and was more like a grandmother to me. The epitome of strength, kindness and grace. She was a trailblazer; the first in our family to go to boarding school (Banasthali, in the 1930s), the first to go overseas for higher education. Probably among the very few women in our parts back then to hold drivers and firearms licenses. She was a very successful professional (gynecologist), but always had time for others and herself. She took a month off in the summer to travel the world. She and her husband built a beautiful house which they decorated with artifacts collected from their travels. An avid reader, when she called me she always asked me what I was reading, shared her list and made recommendations. Her other favorite hobby was playing cards with her friends, they would get together Sunday afternoons to play cards. I never saw her cooking, but she gave detailed instructions to her cooks, and made sure every night’s dinner was a gourmet delight. She remained a learner all her life, always wanting to learn about new gadgets, technology etc. She taught me most of what I know about my ancestors, family history, origins etc (Dad was not one to talk about such things). To sum up what I think of her personality, I will borrow often used words from a poem- Her face was like the King’s command when all the swords are drawn.
