I am surprised that it is surprising! The USA is huge and largely empty. Alaska alone must contribute a large portion of non-private land. I didn’t look it up, just guessing for authenticity of my claim about intuition: My guess is that of the 40%, at least a third, maybe as much as half, of that is Alaska alone. It’s got to be very little private ownership there. If I am right, that probably is almost the entire gap between how much is privately owned, and the larger figure that most people would be assuming.

There’s a conspiracy culture on the right. Even when outlets aren’t spreading conspiracies and aren’t providing false information, they’re creating headlines and framing stories in a way to appeal to conspiracy theorists, who are their audience. This is bad.

Vance did well in his interviews today. Most of his problems stem from falling in with a bad crowd, the Tucker and Dissident Right sphere, when he adopted their paranoid worldview, talking points, and style. He's smart enough to have learned quickly to leave all that behind.
