I like John Cooper. I like that Skillet hasn’t apostatized like virtually every other “Christian” band from my youth. I like metal-core. I’m generally not a fuddy duddy. But… This is not great. It’s not great because it’s not fitting. The medium is at war with the message. Oh, come oh, come, Emmanuel is a song that beautifully explores themes of bitter pain & longing, paired with hopeful expectation & Joy. The original melody and musical accompaniment reinforces & enhances the message, whereas this hyper aggressive metalcore rendition actually detracts from/is at war with the message of the song. I would be all for a metal core version of the Son of God goes forth to war, king Alfred’s War Song, or even Psalm 2. Why? Because in those cases, the hyper aggressive metalcore could actually enhance the message of the song. Unfortunately, many Christians have become artistic existentialists. We have bought into the lie that beauty is simply in the eye of the beholder, all artist subjective, and it is up to the individual to bring meaning to the art. I reject this. Beauty is not ultimately in the eye of the beholder. Beauty is ultimately in the eye of the creator. We should always ask the question, “does God find this beautiful?” We serve a God of order. We serve a God who created the beautiful cosmos, everything in its place. I do believe there is a fitting place for metal core, frantic break downs, screaming, and guitar solos. But oh, oh come, Emmanuel is simply not the place for it.

Where in the Bible does it tell me which genres of music are allowed to sing hymns to the Lord? Because I’m pretty sure that doesn’t exist. This is sounding a bit like the TV evangelists that used to encourage burning Stryper records. John Cooper is one of the soundest minds in Christian music—his theology, his perspectives, and the way he uses his craft have ALWAYS reflected the truth of Christ. As someone that’s been listening to Skillet since their debut in the 90s, John Cooper and the members of Skillet have ALWAY chased the authentic truth of the Word of God. They’ve written countless songs reflecting that. Now they choose to do a version of a Christmas hymn, and we want to tear it apart? Unacceptable. Our minds need to be wallpapered with SCRIPTURE. If Skillet was using their style and sound to altar the message of Scripture, I could support “rejecting” this cover. But that’s not the case. Hymns are beautiful, and sacred in their own way. But they’re also a manmade supplement. God gives all of us abilities to use our talents to worship Him—Skillet’s rock and roll version of this can still equally glorify God in the same way as someone singing it traditionally from a church pew. This is a bit of a sour take when there are things happening in Christianity that are defiling and disgusting and need to ACTUALLY be called out for their blasphemy.
