Happy Teacher Appreciation Week! We admire you for choosing to be a teacher, a "magician" whose impact will be far and wide. We are grateful for all that you do to see the full humanity in all your students and families.

Three universal truths: 1. Teachers are not babysitters. 2. Teachers can’t wait to be back in the classroom once it’s safe. 3. Everyone needs to wear a mask.

If you teach Black kids, it is your responsibility to spark conversations with them (and your colleagues) about race. If you don’t teach Black kids, it is your responsibility to spark conversations with your students (and your colleagues) about race. Discomfort is no excuse.

“If kids open books and "the images they see [of themselves] are distorted, negative [or] laughable, they learn a powerful lesson about how they are devalued in the society in which they are a part," Rudine Sims Bishop, a scholar of children's literature, wrote in a 1990 article

Posting this again for teachers who haven’t read this. This is why I don’t celebrate Dr. Seuss during Read Across America. This matters to our students of color. It matters to me. When you know better, you do better. theconsciouskid.org/blog/2018/2/18…

What is my job when students have access to all the knowledge in the world in the palm of their hands? My job is to INSPIRE and ENGAGE. #CASTEAM19 #proud2bePUSD
