Why do young people blame the older generation for all their problems? Housing, jobs etc. I honestly don’t know wtf this latest shit is all about. Last week tax the rich, this week kill all the boomers ffs 🤦‍♀️

Imagine holding your newborn child. And being told you have to go straight back to work, simply because you’ve just started a new job. That ends today. For all those hardworking parents who were denied those first precious days: Labour has delivered day one parental leave.

@annaroseridgway What in your opinion counts as a millionaire ? Should we all sell up our homes? Should we move into smaller properties, hence taking them away from first time buyers? Or should we all kill ourselves ?

25% of pensioners are millionaires. 55% of welfare spending goes on pensioners. Why don’t we: 1) means test the state pension, millionaires don’t need benefits. 2) increase the amount we give to the pensioners who need it the most. 3) stop the unsustainable triple lock.

Didn’t take long to go from tax the super-rich to scrap the State pension and forcibly remove granny from her house where she’s lived most of her life. Political discourse is nuts at the moment.

@IsabelOakeshott @InvictaRegina There is a lovely Waitrose in our village. Good to know I can just get my fillet steaks and single malt whisky every weekend from now on and just walk out without paying. It will save me a fortune.

IN an extraordinarily stupid statement, Waitrose has just declared its stores are effectively a free-for-all. The company has publicly confirmed staff are told not to tackle shoplifters. How do they think this feeble policy will lead to less theft??

@drhingram Honestly I admit I’m starting to get tempted!! Why should I not only be queuing and paying BUT overpaying to compensate for losses due to stealing. I am actually starting to feel like a mug 😡

Walked past my local Waitrose this morning and imagined what it would be like if all the pensioners decided one day to shoplift en masse to force a policy change. Bad people get away with bad behaviour because good people always toe the line.

@54JohnBull This is my situation - if we sold and bought a two bedroom after fees and expenses we’d be left with circa 60k so not really worth it

This post is spot on. My old mother has a 4 bedroom house and wouldn't mind something smaller. A decent 2 bed in her area would still cost at least £400k, plus £10k in stamp duty. There is little incentive for her to move.

One of the reasons you often find elderly people, on their own, in a large house is stamp duty. If they downsize they get clobbered for tax so it isn't economically viable. Abolish stamp duty on downsizers and we will see a huge shift in the market. And HMRC get Tax on the resale

To be clear, I want young people to have homes & work & fantastic lives. I can’t imagine why anyone wouldn’t. But this hatred of older people is not acceptable. And it IS hatred. Pure venom I have no idea where it came from but it will not end well, for anyone Change course.

There are boomers sitting in large houses who don’t even want to free up equity or sell their house to help their own children get on the ladder. This is the level of selfishness we are dealing with. Thank god for parents like my mother She would sell her house in Tottenham tomorrow if it meant helping me…. And I would do anything to make her life comfortable- that’s what family is about. An eco system of giving. These days many boomers don’t want to help with grandchildren or finacial assistance and children don’t want to help their parents - so much selfishness between recent generations and it will get worse.

These young people who never think they will be old, who think that changing the triple lock, depriving the elderly of the £16bn uplift a year will change the housing market, the job market, suddenly see salaries quadruple... they show how idiotic and economically illiterate they are. Stop blaming the elserly, 90%+ of whom worked and paid tax for the catasptrophic economic approacj that has affected the young.
Lin Mei@linmeitalks

Can I ask why, if a pensioner has worked all their life, they only have the state pension to rely on? Didn’t decide to save ? Put away for a rainy day ? Sounds like poor planning to me. And yes if your children have flown the nest and you, or you and your spouse are knocking around in a 3 or 4 bedroom house you bought decades ago- SELL it. You’ll have more than enough to live on.

@BenedictSpence Is any ther country having this debate? Or is it just the truly mental UK. Parents should pay for children and the state owes people a pension 🙄 we will all get old and people approaching pension age deserve what they were promised. Next generation perhaps not 🤔

Pensioners will call you heartless for not wanting to fund the retirement they failed to prepare for, and then shrug when you ask them how we should pay for children.

@gavinantonyrice I don’t object to his “fact”; I object to his inability to be civil, polite; his persistent rudeness. His “fact”, moreover, did not contradict ZG’s “facts”; his starting point is always to patronise and belittle - ie to bully, rather than to think and engage respectfully.

Couldn’t buy a coffee from Greggs just now because they were busy dealing with a guy who was trying to loot all the sandwiches. Went to Costa instead, where they now have a bouncer standing next to the fridge. 🥴

@WorldByWolf Who gives a shit about degrees or qualifications ? If you study and learn in the real world makes you better than book smart in my opinion. I have no degree and two small business’s and know more about business than most grads.

I’m not sure most people realise that Douglas Murray’s only formal qualification is a third class bachelors degree in English Literature. By his own standards he isn’t qualified to talk about foreign policy, immigration, or Islam - all of which he’s built his career on.
