Évariste Galois developed a completely new way to understand equations, laying the groundwork for what would later become group theory which is a cornerstone of modern mathematics. He thought differently from anyone around him, seeing patterns and structures in algebra that others could not even imagine. Tragically, his life was cut short at just 20. On the night before a duel that would take his life, he feverishly wrote letters detailing many of his groundbreaking ideas, determined to preserve them for the world. Despite his brief life, Galois’ insights revolutionized mathematics and continue to influence the field to this day. (📷Évariste Galois at age of 15)

Ever wondered why gold is yellow? The answer is Einstein’s Special Relativity. In Gold (Atomic Number 79), the nucleus is so massive & packed with protons that the inner electrons have to orbit at incredible speeds (~58% the speed of light) just to avoid crashing into the center. At these relativistic speeds, the electrons gain mass (according to E=mc^2). This mass increase shifts the energy levels of the electron sea. Cos of this relativistic contraction, Gold's electrons become better at absorbing blue & violet light, rather than reflecting them. Since the blue is stolen by the atoms, the light that bounces back to our eye is shifted toward the yellow/red end of the spectrum.

A truck carrying antiprotons will drive across Europe. A team at CERN just transported antimatter across the laboratory's campus in a truck. Literally. 92 antiprotons packed into a portable trap weighing one tonne. As everyone knows, antimatter annihilates on contact with ordinary matter - which is basically everything. The final destination is Germany: Heinrich Heine University in Düsseldorf. An extraordinary delivery in the history of road transport. home.cern/news/press-rel…

An ancient artifact from a more civilized time.
