In Shigeaki Mori, a Japanese atomic bomb survivor from Hiroshima, President Obama saw the best of humanity, even while reflecting on one of our darkest chapters.
Mori died Sunday at age 88. Today, we honor his example, which President Obama spoke to in 2016 when he visited Hiroshima on the 71st anniversary of America dropping the atomic bomb on that city. Among the more than 140,000 killed in Hiroshima, Mori discovered 30 years later that there were 12 American POWs. He researched the men and wrote to their families, who didn’t yet know how their loved ones had died.
President Obama was the first sitting U.S. president to visit Hiroshima, and while there, he reflected on Mori’s work — how it connected people through their shared humanity, regardless of their countless differences: “We’re not bound by genetic code to repeat the mistakes of the past. We can learn. We can choose. We can tell our children a different story –- one that describes a common humanity; one that makes war less likely and cruelty less easily accepted.
We see these stories in the hibakusha –- the woman who forgave a pilot who flew the plane that dropped the atomic bomb, because she recognized that what she really hated was war itself; the man who sought out families of Americans killed here, because he believed their loss was equal to his own.”
In telling the story of the universality of loss, Mori set an example for us all and we are all better for his contributions.

🏈 George County Rebels — 2026 Schedule Breakdown
Head Coach: Kelly Causey
2026 Season: 2nd season at George County
Head Coaching Experience: 19th season overall
Coach Kelly Causey enters his second season leading the Rebels after guiding George County to the playoffs in 2025. The Rebels reached the postseason but fell in the first round. The focus in year two will be building on that playoff appearance and pushing deeper into the postseason.

🏈 Non-Region Games
Aug 28 — at Gautier
A Coast matchup to open the regular season. Gautier continues building its program, but opening on the road always brings challenges.
Sept 4 — South Jones
South Jones has been one of the stronger programs in South Mississippi. This will be an early measuring stick for the Rebels.
Sept 11 — Greene County (Veterans Night)
A local matchup that should bring energy and emotion to Rebel Stadium.
Sept 18 — at Wayne County
Wayne County traditionally fields physical teams and this road trip could be a tough test before region play.
Sept 25 — at Stone
A very interesting Coast matchup. Stone County has been one of the more consistent programs on the Coast in recent seasons.

🏈 Region 4-6A Games
Oct 9 — at West Jones
West Jones has been one of the most consistent programs in the region. Winning on the road here will be a challenge.
Oct 16 — Jim Hill (Homecoming)
A home opportunity for the Rebels to pick up an important region victory.
Oct 23 — Hattiesburg (Cheer Night)
Hattiesburg brings speed and athleticism every season. This could be a key playoff positioning game.
Oct 30 — at Terry
Terry has improved over the past several seasons and road region games are always tricky.
Nov 5 — Forest Hill (Senior Night)
Regular season finale at home that could have postseason implications.

Stat Man Early Schedule Take
George County faces a balanced schedule in 2026 with a mix of Coast opponents and Pine Belt programs before entering Region 4-6A play.
The stretch against South Jones, Wayne County, and Stone County should help prepare the Rebels for the region race.
With Kelly Causey entering year two at George County and his 19th season overall as a head coach, the goal will be turning last year’s playoff appearance into a deeper postseason run.
