A scandal which has tragically claimed the lives of 90 people serving IPP sentences in prison & a further 31 that we know of in the community - I cannot overstate the urgency on this. Dear Wes Streeting, the NHS is an investment not a cost. Every £1 invested in NHS is estimated to benefit the wider economy by many times that. The truth is we need a strong NHS for strong economy. We can never have a strong economy with a weak NHS.

The NHS may be broken, according to @UKLabour @wesstreeting, but here’s how to fix it. Prevention, Prevention, Prevention, Prevention…. 1. Prevent poverty. It’s the single biggest determinant of ill health, and health and social care demand, both now and in the future. Blair and Brown made good progress in reducing it. So it can be done. 2. Prevent illness, with a relentless focus on living well, self-care, mental health support and tackling the commercial determinants of illness. Dental disease is the commonest cause of childhood operations, and yet it’s almost 100% preventable. 3. Prevent existing risks and diseases getting worse, with evidence-based screening and a substantial shift in resources to primary, community and social care 4. Preventing waste and medical harm, by ensuring patients receive the right care, in the right place, from the right people at the right time. This is the toughest nut to crack, as it requires adequate numbers of well trained and well rested staff working in safe, clean environments with the right equipment. We currently spent three times as much litigating harms from maternity care than we do on maternity care. This is a permanent disaster and would be a very good place to start. Instead of repeating our mistakes, we need to learn from them. This is one of the hardest but also one of the most important warnings from the history of Auschwitz coming for us today. Perpetrators were in fact people who accepted and followed an ideology that made them believe that they were better than others, an ideology that rationalized and promoted hatred & evil. This became part of their everyday lives and their environment. They were not monsters. They were people: fathers and mothers, husbands and wives, sons and daughters. They had their family joys and problems, their favorite desserts or songs, hobbies or fears. They were people like us. But they also perpetrated horrible things, monstrous things on behalf of the ideology they believed in. The perpetrators thought of themselves as moral people. And this is the scary part of this history. This is our human warning.
