JUST IN: U.S. inflation jumped to 3.8% (y/y) in April--> the highest in three years. This is painful for Americans, especially moderate-income households. Inflation rose 0.6% in the month of April due to soaring gas prices that accounted for over 40% of the increase. Rising shelter and food prices also pushed up inflation. Core inflation (which excludes food and energy came in at 2.8% (y/y) in April

"The Joint Finance Committee will take up the deal tomorrow with both houses voting on it Wednesday."
WisPolitics (State Affairs Pro Wisco)@WisPolitics

Dem @GovEvers and @WisGOP legislative leaders reached a $1.8B deal to pump more 💰 money into schools 📚, drive down property 🏡 taxes, send Wisconsinites a 📨rebate, plus exempt cash tips and overtime from the state #incometax. #Wisconsin previously had a projected surplus of nearly $2.5B at the end of the 2025-27 budget. The price tag of the deal would be offset somewhat by new #revenue projections from the Evers administration suggesting the state could take in $300 - $350M 📈 more in #tax collections than what was previously projected. pro.stateaffairs.com/wi/news/evers-…

As in the rest of Wisconsin, the pace of development in Jefferson County has slowed in the last decade, and its schools saw enrollment declines. Our latest report began via a request from Jefferson Co. officials. But it's meant to inform the work of officials across the state.

This is an important point about Baltimore's success. Yes, they have expanded violence interruption programs, but they are also relentlessly focused on the relatively small number of people responsible for violence and closing cases.
Matthew Zeitlin@MattZeitlin

brandon scott's odd lots interview is amazing, he's talking up baltimore's violence interruptors program but then also explains that they essentially have a precrime system to prevent future murders

Living in Wisconsin and personally knowing tons of formerly Republican voters who vote Dem now and being familiar with rural areas that used to be competitive but are now 70% Republican, I just don't get the people who argue swing voters don't exist.

“The central paradox is this: AI reliably improves immediate task performance while degrading the underlying human capabilities that produce that performance. You get better results today, but become less capable tomorrow.”
Michael Mauboussin@mjmauboussin

I loved the article, "AI Isn't Coming for Your Job. It's Coming for Your Mind" by Tom Slater at Baillie Gifford. h/t Ian McKinnon, chairman of the board of trustees @sfiscience. Points about mastery and cognitive diversity are particularly relevant. Worth discussing in professional and educational contexts. bailliegifford.com/en/uk/individu…

With student A.I. use/abuse now ubiquitous, professors and teachers are killing off take-home essays and papers. Students are writing inside the classroom, often by hand. It's part of the big rethink happening on tech and learning. My new report here: nytimes.com/2026/04/30/us/…

.@MilwaukeeDCD’s @LafayetteCrump says Milwaukee already has “one of the most progressive zoning codes in the country.” But he says more zoning reforms may be proposed: “There’s still tweaks we can make to give more certainty and make more things possible throughout the city.”
