Alberta Municipalities | Strength in Members@ABmunis

Premier @ABDanielleSmith and Municipal Affairs Minister @RicMcIver told ABmunis members that @YourAlberta intends to introduce political parties at the municipal level, possibly during this session of the Legislature. Rather than introducing political parties, ABmunis has suggested to the government four changes to existing legislation that would improve transparency & make it easier for voters to know who is funding candidates. #BREAKING: I was obviously not alone in being utterly astounded at statements made by Alberta Premier @ABDanielleSmith on Tuesday, when she said addiction deaths in Alberta “are trending in the right direction.” 😱 This morning HSAA - The Health Sciences Association of Alberta, the union for 29,000+ (!!!) health-care workers in Alberta - released an open letter. "On Tuesday, the Premier said, 'we're seeing addiction-related deaths at all-time lows.' This statement goes against everything our Addictions Counsellors, Mental Health Therapists, Social Workers, Psychologists, and Paramedics are seeing on the frontlines of a toxic drug crisis." "The scale of the toxic drug supply crisis is killing the size of a small town every year and pushing our health-care professionals to their limits.” "Addiction care is health care, and we need to be doing everything we can to prevent overdose deaths. Abstinence alone is not the right strategy for the scale of this crisis. We can't help people get better if they're not alive." 29,000 HEALTH-CARE WORKERS. Deaths are NOT trending in the right direction. ➡️ 1,841 people died from drug poisoning in Alberta from Jan-Nov, 2023 ➡️ That’s a 17% increase over the same time frame in 2022 ➡️ For illicit opioids the increase in deaths is a grim 29% 💔 These are record-breaking numbers. We can’t solve this emergency by pretending it’s not happening. Health-care workers know it, I know it, and I think you know it too. #ToxicDrugCrisis #ABpoli #ABleg #CdnPoli PS. Without interesting new learnings from the #RecoveryCapitalConference to tweet about, I’m stuck watching the news instead. ENJOY! 😉

Acknowledging the impact of trauma, & the extent to which our trauma responses aren't "choices," isn't about defecting responsibility. It's the literal, exact opposite: the first step to taking realistic, actionable responsibility for our lives & REAL choices from here on out.

As elected officials, our decisions are better when we have people around us that provide good advice. Good advice doesn’t always agree with our current perspective. Difficult conversations mean you’re doing it right.

In order to meaningfully engage with Ottawa and get a Clean Electricity Reg that makes sense for AB, the Premier needs people around her with a clue. Over the last 10 days, it has become clear that's not the case. I hope that will change.

If walking costs you $1, we all pay $0.01. If biking costs you $1, we all pay $0.08. If bussing costs you $1, we all pay $1.50. If driving costs you $1, we all pay $9.20. Via @thediscourse study. This isn’t just about choice. It’s about who pays for your choice. #citymakingmath
