#BREAKING: I was obviously not alone in being utterly astounded at statements made by Alberta Premier @ABDanielleSmith on Tuesday, when she said addiction deaths in Alberta “are trending in the right direction.” 😱 This morning HSAA - The Health Sciences Association of Alberta, the union for 29,000+ (!!!) health-care workers in Alberta - released an open letter. "On Tuesday, the Premier said, 'we're seeing addiction-related deaths at all-time lows.' This statement goes against everything our Addictions Counsellors, Mental Health Therapists, Social Workers, Psychologists, and Paramedics are seeing on the frontlines of a toxic drug crisis." "The scale of the toxic drug supply crisis is killing the size of a small town every year and pushing our health-care professionals to their limits.” "Addiction care is health care, and we need to be doing everything we can to prevent overdose deaths. Abstinence alone is not the right strategy for the scale of this crisis. We can't help people get better if they're not alive." 29,000 HEALTH-CARE WORKERS. Deaths are NOT trending in the right direction. ➡️ 1,841 people died from drug poisoning in Alberta from Jan-Nov, 2023 ➡️ That’s a 17% increase over the same time frame in 2022 ➡️ For illicit opioids the increase in deaths is a grim 29% 💔 These are record-breaking numbers. This move by the premier and her government is bad judgement.

Speaking as a guy who used to oversee the company that built the last natural gas power plant in Alberta, and who understands electricity markets a bit, I can say the Premier’s argument here makes no sense. Pure gibberish. Who is advising her? Can they get someone better?

Interesting article and series on the business of government. Really helpful to better understand some of the dynamics at play in my world.
