this position was basically standard until ~2016-‘18, slowly shifted when ML got rebranded as AI, and then collapsed entirely when chatgpt’s virality sent the google brain team into a panic and otherwise reasonable scientists began wondering ‘maybe I’ve been wrong the whole time’

People ask me, "didn't you say before ChatGPT that deep learning had hit a wall and there would be no more progress?" I have never said this. I was saying the opposite (that scaling DL would deliver). You might be thinking of Gary Marcus. My pre-ChatGPT position (below) was that scaling up DL would keep delivering better and better results, and *also* that it wasn't the way to AGI (as I defined it: human-level skill acquisition efficiency). This was a deeply unpopular position at the time (neither AI skeptic nor AGI-via-DL-scaling prophet). It is now completely mainstream.

This new study found a flaw in most econometric analyses of future damages from climate change. They used a different modelling approach that incorporates global economic interconnectedness, and found when you do this, projected damages are much greater than originally estimated.

I speak both of Canada's official languages.
I agree that fluency in both should be a requirement for very senior roles, like Prime Minister, Governor General, and the Chief Electoral Office. But that's it.
We don't need every judge, RCMP office, or every military officer to be bilingual. That just limits the talent pool for no valid reason.
And offering services in both languages should be based on common sense.
It's a waste of time and money to have to listen to the flight crew tell me how to buckle up in French, when I'm flying from Fort McMurray to Edmonton.

This is by far the craziest video from the fire in Los Angeles. This guy is filming huge walls of fire surrounding a house they're in, and there's another person and a dog. I have no idea why they didn't evacuate or what happened to them. Let's hope they're okay. #PalisadesFire

This woman responded to the USPS scam text and got scammed for $700.
She fell for it because she was waiting for a package from overseas. She clicked the link and it asked for a card. Denied that card so she entered another one.
The post office would never text you.

People want things other than minimal food and shelter. People can be rewarded for work with luxuries without threatening them with starvation.
Finland is already doing these things e.g. If you are homeless they provide a tiny but clean and safe apartment.

@Darren76780228 @peterbropotkin First of all, money does not create resources. Money allocates resources. We "pay for" things by doing the work.
Work is of course necessary, though less than in the past since we have so many fine machines. Work could still be rewarded by luxury above basic food and shelter.

However if we keep fighting as if there were scarcity, actual scarcity will come. You won't like it.
