SINO METALS AND RONGXING TO PAY K16.2 MILLION COMPENSATION TO OVER 700 FARMERS AFFECTED BY FEBRUARY ACID SPILL By Lovemore Sondashi More than 700 farmers affected by environmental pollution linked to Sino Metals and Rongxing Investment Limited in Kalulushi District are set to begin receiving compensation this week, the government has confirmed. Copperbelt Province Minister Elisha Matambo announced the development after meeting with representatives of the affected farmers. He stated that the long-awaited compensation process is now ready to begin, marking a major milestone in bringing closure to a matter that has disrupted livelihoods and caused widespread concern. Mr. Matambo revealed that a total of 707 farmers were affected 253 due to pollution from Rongxing Investment Limited, and 454 from Sino Metals. The compensation, estimated at over K16 million, will cover damage to crops, land, and livestock caused by acid spillages earlier this year. He explained that the compensation report, which was previously submitted to Lusaka for scrutiny and approval by six line ministries, including Agriculture, has now been returned to the province without any amendments, paving the way for immediate payments. Meanwhile, Maimbolwa Likukela, who spoke on behalf of the affected farmers, welcomed the development and expressed gratitude to the government for ensuring justice prevailed. The acid spillages, which occurred in February this year, sparked outrage among local communities and raised environmental concerns. The government engaged the two companies responsible, ensuring that they take full responsibility for the damage caused. #NewsOnTheGo
