@pourfairelevide Is it true that this will be the first time for a digital edition? The audiobook is in Apple Books for preorder, but apparently not the text?

The thing about The Tunnel is that it’s far easier to read and understand sentence-by-sentence than almost any other modernist masterpiece of similar caliber. Gass is an extremely clear writer; his genius is clarity; he couldn’t be otherwise.

Genuinely kind of shocked neither Alito or Thomas have retired yet. Why gamble with dems winning the Senate this year when you could retire now in your mid 70s and have a 100% chance of getting another conservative replacement.

@kristenrudd It’s possible, even with the best intentions, to end up not buying McCarthy’s greatest hits represented in this book. If so, try “Suttree” next. It really is the Southern Ulysses, and very funny too. A much less talked about CM, and in important ways returned to in his last book.

“Miss Macintosh, My Darling” is going out of print again?!Folks, if you don't plan to read a book within a year of purchase, just buy digital, and leave a few physical copies to the real heads. So many dead trees crammed on your shelf, dying a second time, why bother.

@heystpress A bit confused. The ’06 Spanish edition is listed as over 1600 pages long, but another edition in ’11 is a bit over 700, which seems to agree with the nyrb listing. I wonder if it’s more like an edited collection of diaries kind of thing, rather than an actual penned biography?

@Anthony_Bonato As somebody who doesn't drink, I didn't know until very recently that "proof" has another meaning.

Bad math joke: A mathematician walks into a bar, then immediately walks out again because they figured out their proof

Remarkable thing about Paul Ehrlich is not just how wrong he was but that we was totally unphased and unchastened by his wrongness, just a total epistemic disaster zone — a pattern of conduct that is unfortunately shared by many prominent people from different schools of thought.

Infinite Jest is almost the exact same length of W&P. You need to account for the ridiculously tight print of the former and leave out the glosses in the latter, as they are not part of the original, and probably only a small percentage of readers go through most of them anyway.

@nr_wayne Is the main text font a bit bigger, but not much? I read it on iPad, and long suspected that the page count is understating just how long the book is. I could be wrong (every AI I ask tells me so), but with uniform font on the device, my version is longer than the annotated W&P.

Listening again, but the footnotes are just a delightful reminder of how brilliant and unique DFW was, specifically here regarding the elaborate and hilarious universe at E.T.A. I’m guessing there are at least a few of you thinking about rereading IJ. I think you should 😬

@s_r_tarnmoor Is the book still big in Texas? The algo never stopped pushing it ever since I took an interest in Cormac, some posts even invoke GAN, as the old west is historically the "most American." The cliche in me wanna say I wish there's a modern TV version so I can get a quick idea.

Larry McMurtry, Lonesome Dove. Fine ig but idk I think if you're going for "unromanticized story about what it actually felt like to be in the Old West" you can't at the same time do "every single bad thing that ever happened in the Old West will happen to my characters"

Remember when someone thought it was a good enough idea to air that you should spend as much time reading a book as the author did writing it?I think what makes a bit more sense is you can start reading it at the author’s age when it began gestation.

@xtebordo I arrived at this suspicion after finishing "Infinite Jest." It was quite hard otherwise to explain why so few people talked about how funny it is.

@eri0208i Genuine question: do women love abs for the visual, the touch, the implications of male prowess, or all of the above?
