Automatic translation across Twitter is amazing . Some may tell us we are opposite of each other, that ‘others’ hate us and we must hate them in return. The truth is so different. We all love deeply - our families, our pets, our homes, nature, music, books, gardens, dance, tea, coffee… and that is what unites us. Love. I’m reading wonderful, ordinary stories from around the world about everyday things: a favourite meal, a cup of tea in a garden, a beautiful old, beloved dog, a grandmother’s plate - in a post written in the author’s own words. I can answer them as if we shared a common language and, suddenly, the world is smaller. Communication - real communication about the things that matter - is a wonderful thing. Forget borders, markets, oil, weapons and just ask someone (in another country, speaking another language, whom you have been told is your enemy) what their favourite food is. It’s liberating. With a sweep of a translation app borders are down and kindness, acceptance and friendship is in. Hello world! It’s so lovely to meet you all.
