I recently received a call from one of my former direct reports. I was hiring for a graphic designer, and the team preferred a female candidate. At the time, it was tough finding someone trustworthy. She was referred to me by a mentee, and I decided to give her a chance. She only had experience working at printing presses using CorelDraw. She had no corporate experience, but she was willing, eager, and very open to learning and growing. When she joined, we had our moments—back and forth discussions, rants, and long design review hours to help her understand how to design using the principles perfectly. I never forced my preferred design software on her. Instead, I helped her improve with the tools she was already familiar with while periodically teaching her how to use other software that could help her stand out in future roles. Fast forward to today, she mentioned how sad and tearful she was when I left the company, and how that motivated her to make good design decisions independently using the tips and guidance I always shared with her. She also mentioned how much faster she is now with design and how her mind is now programmed for design thinking. This, for me, is one of the reasons why I do this
