No one believes me when I say this, but the decline in reading is already having dire consequences for art & culture. The media you loved in your youth—shows, albums, films—was made by artists who were widely read. You will not have that quality of art in a post-literate world.

Not going to boost this account but this is a terrible way to approach life. This attitude is the reason kids are growing up never hearing of Robin Hood or King Arthur. They have been deprived of their inheritance. Resist the tyranny of the present moment.

@SketchesbyBoze @acobasi I think society would be in a better place if college first focused on youths exploring what it means to be human (liberal arts) and try to apply it to their own lives. People can focus on career but forget vocation, only to painfully realize later that our souls can't be bribed.

In time we’ll see the mass closure of humanities departments as among the most clueless & self-defeating things that’s ever been done. As Carl Sagan said, a school that doesn’t teach history, philosophy, music, literature is offering you a half-education at best.

The incentive to make money has so twisted our priorities that people can’t believe you enjoy learning for its own sake. It ends in a world where no one knows history, poetry, myth because they see no profit in it. Disdain for the humanities reveals a total poverty of spirit.
