Zayd ibn ʿAlī narrated to me, from his father, from his grandfather al-Ḥusayn (may Allah be pleased with them both): He said: While ʿAlī (may Allah be pleased with him) was among you in Kūfa, fighting Muʿāwiyah ibn Abī Sufyān, in the courtyard of this mosque of yours, sitting with his legs drawn up, holding the strap of his sword, and the people were gathered closely around him, those nearest to him being the Companions of the Messenger of Allah, and next to them the Followers (tābiʿūn), a man from among his companions said: “O Commander of the Faithful, describe to us the Messenger of Allah as if we are looking at him, for you preserve that better than we do.” He (ʿAlī) lowered his head, and at the mention of the Messenger of Allah his heart softened and his eyes filled with tears. Then he raised his head and said: “Yes. The Messenger of Allah was neither intensely white nor ruddy; rather, there was a slight redness in his complexion. He had very dark eyes, straight hair, a fine, slender nose, smooth cheeks, a thin line of hair (from chest downward), and a thick beard. When his hair grew long, it would reach his earlobes. It was as though his neck were a vessel of silver. He had a line of hair running from his chest to his navel like a thin rod. There was no other hair on his chest or belly except a few scattered hairs on his chest. He was large of hand and foot. When he walked, it was as though he lifted himself from rock, or as if descending a slope. When he turned, he would turn his whole body together. He was neither tall nor weak and slight. It was as if sweat were pearls, and the scent of his perspiration was more fragrant than musk. I have never seen anyone like him before him nor after him.” — Musnad al-Imām Zayd
