Recently relocated from California to Scotland. Former teacher, politician, stay-at-home dad. Now I watch the sky, play with my dog, and cook. I love to cook.

Pentagon in disarray is like the dog catching the car and thinking Now What? I was in a group that went to the Pentagon to do some lobbying a couple years ago. Every uniformed bigwig we met had contempt for Democrats, and especially for President Biden. theguardian.com/us-news/2026/m…

AOC says Democrats should respond to SCOTUS weakening the VRA by doing their own redistricting until a national gerrymander ban passes

@sam_d_1995 In 1983, Soldier of Fortune magazine ran a scathing expose of Bo Gritz, who was the driving force behind the outlandish bullshit behind the flag. It's not online but I might have a copy somewhere.

@g_leichtfuss @mnolangray DrCastro didn’t see the point to the committee & as chair I advised he disband it. Meanwhile Council was still NIMBY, doing the downzone-a-rama on the general plan. Neither council nor residents appreciate how closing schools will impact home values & thus property tax receipts

@g_leichtfuss @mnolangray I was on the declining enrollment committee under the previous superintendent & nobody would say aloud that schools would have to close. Ventura’s decline is a lot higher than 15% from 2010 to 2020 census. But fear meant we spun wheels rather than laying the unpopular groundwork.

I don't think the average Californian is registered that, if the state can't make itself affordable to working- and middle-class families in the next few years, there will be mass school closures.
Garry Tan@garrytan

California will lose 15.7% of its public school students by 2031. Nearly 3x the national rate. Idaho and Florida are growing. This isn't an inevitability — it'a consequence of what happens when housing costs too much and schools stop working. gli.st/2rmnc27p

@scotttheskeptic ...as are the trucks. Imagine being able to manufacture and sell headless trucks that will only operate along the homologue of railroad tracks. That bootstraps you into limited self driving and then full self driving.

@scotttheskeptic The model of all vehicles hurtling along the same 80' wide strip of concrete ties everything in knots. Autonomous trucks could drive fast & close, but not w/shaved apes playing bumper cars. An unpiloted truck route, because no people are allowed, is easier to engineer...

What many fail to realize is that for AVs to function, the surrounding infrastructure must be uniform. And well maintained. That nearly non-visible crosswalk? Must be kept up for AV to recognize it. Are AV companies stepping up with maintenance budgets to ensure AV works? Nope!
Anthony LaMesa@ajlamesa

Robotaxis are a useful technology that we should embrace and refine, but it's ridiculous to believe they can replace buses, trams, and metros -- quality public transportation -- in crowded cities where space is at a premium.

@scotttheskeptic You could have routes that allow FSD. That ban it. That require it. That allow human drivers. That ban them. That require them. Filter autonomous trucks off the 710, ban humans on the truck route, and you'd sell a loooot of trucks. It's like a train. But fancy.

@scotttheskeptic Imagine AVs sending notices to a municipality that the limit line at an intersection need to be repainted. If the city doesn't, the road gets reclassified. Which means, a resident is in their AV & now when it comes to Maple Ave the car asks, "do we reroute? Or do I disable FSD?"

@SamwiseGLAMgee I've been to plenty of Trader Joe's since like 1980ish and I have zero recollection of any sort of healthy image. When they were really marketing themselves it was in the Fearless Flyer days, and it was all about the cheap and vaguely ethnic.

Am I Mandela-ing this or didn’t Trader Joe’s used to claim some level of “healthy”? Like having whole grains and no artificial whatevers was a key part of the marketing at the beginning
𝖓𝖎𝖓𝖊 🕯@atlanticesque

Trader Joe’s reputation is totally misunderstood. Despite the crunchy-sounding name, Trader Joe’s sells CHEAP, EASY food. Lots of snacks and frozen stuff at low prices. It’s basically a college freshman’s ideal. It’s not, like, a fair trade-ethical-organic specialty grocer.

I set my phone to use monochrome display abt a wk ago. So far only real negative thing about it is when I settle down to scroll thither & yon, it’s remarkably dull, & soon I need to find something else to stave off the shrieking existential dread. That & Google Maps kinda sucks.
