Given its extensive and rich history, every FDOT project in St. Augustine is conducted with extreme diligence. Archaeologists monitoring a 2023 project on King Street made the remarkable discovery of a wooden ship buried 13 feet below the ground. The excavation of this 1800s vessel, known as a Sharpie, was recovered and is currently undergoing preservation at the St. Augustine Lighthouse Archaeological Maritime Program (LAMP) located at the St. Augustine Lighthouse & Maritime Museum (bit.ly/42jj41Y).
