Between 2008 and 2020, U.S. newspaper newsroom employment fell 57%. More than 200 counties are now "news deserts"—no local outlet at all. In another 1,500+ counties, only one remains. pewresearch.org/short-reads/20…

This morning CNN announced that its "All Access" subscription tier – enabling people to live stream CNN TV without cable – will roll out on October 28. And more importantly, CNN set the price: $6.99 per month, $69.99 per year. (And an intro price of $41.99 for the first year.)

Starting next week we’ll be testing a new way to share and engage with web links on X. The goal will be to ensure all content on the platform has equal visibility on Timeline.

@myurow @RyanNorthover @sarafischer Mat, do you have access to the actual time spent? I'd be keen to know if some of those proportional moves are absolute moves or if there are just more hours being consumed.

I'm on a mission to find the best khao soi in New York City. Khao Soi is a creamy curry and is by far the best dish ever created. I will rank every bowl of khao soi I eat. This one is from Senn Thai on the Upper West Side. 6.2/10

The loss of local news relates to so many other problems plaguing the US: Polarization, radicalization, loneliness, lack of trust in everyone and everything.   So this new data is vital 🧵

@KarstenW News apps are going to follow suit. E-mail is moving native. Most of those traffic sources are likely to move “zero clicks.” Suspect that a much larger drop in totality than 30-40%.

@KarstenW Search is endemic of a bigger trend. Platforms are prioritizing keep users within their walls. FB and X algos have been demoting content with external links for years, and consumption has broadly shifted to platforms where native media is king (eg TikTok, IG).

Publishers are at risk of losing about 40% of their traffic because of the impact of AI chatbots. These numbers show that one AI search result offsets about 10 traditional searches. On average, let's say perhaps 40% of publishers' traffic is from search referrals. Let's be conservative and say they lose 30 points of that traffic eventually. Other traffic sources (social, core usership) will be indirectly affected as the search flywheel falls away. Let's say they might lose another 10 points for a total of a 40% loss, and an attendant loss of ad revenue, with fallout for vendors. Granted, it is way too early and the numbers are too scarce to make precise forecasts. @myurow said "less than three years"... unclear based on the numbers so far, but the adoption of gen AI search over traditional search will be extremely rapid. Two to three years does seem like a reasonable assumption. But what this shows is that the risk to publishers is imminent and real. What can they do to fight this? Shoutout to @myurow for featuring this.

Publishers have < 3 years before the bottom falls out on referral traffic. Unlikely those visits will be replaced by other platforms. The time to start focusing on loyalty, direct lines of communication, and non-volume driven monetization is now (really, a few years ago).

@sarafischer @TheAtlantic Another big thing: Between The Atlantic, 11Alive, and Fox 5 Atlanta ... publishers related to the letters "ATLANT" represent a 70% share of this list. Coincidence?
