Happy birthday to one of the great bassists of all time, Cecil McBee. The first time I heard Cecil was on Grachan Moncur's great Blue Note album, Some Other Stuff. I was only 14 but could immediately hear that Cecil sounded quite different from what I'd heard other bassists do…

…but I also wanted to take a step back from writing about my father as a person and just honor the music. I put a lot of energy into it, and I'm thrilled to have it out in the world.

3/3 I look at this as the final piece of a trilogy, my melodic albums. Perhaps I’ll change up a bit next time. But I love melody, and I think I’ve found some nice ones here. A melodic free jazz album, interesting concept. Hoping some of you will give a listen!

Roy Ayers Ubiquity's "Everybody Loves the Sunshine" turns 50 today. I've spent the last few months going deep on my father's song—its unusual 50-year ascent, and why it's never quite gotten its due. Next week I have a piece in the LA Times, and I'll be talking about it on KCRW.
