A completely fair question, which is why these brief 1-3 minute embedded tornadoes are called “spin-ups.” There were 0 warnings for the line approaching KC, then the storms finally hit an untapped area of energy. A very quick escalation, but was why we had a tornado watch. #KCwx

@JacobLanierWx @fox4kc Non severe? How did it turn into a tornado then? A lot are asking.

Something worth noting: I was monitoring Illinois State Police scanner traffic as this happened, and ISP was actively referencing “Chicago & Midwest Storm Chasers Video” to help relay actual visuals from the scene and the amount of vehicles. I understand that some viewers may consider imagery like this sensitive. However, tornado-related accidents are, by definition, news events. This is no different from footage captured by a news helicopter or a ground reporter. Turn on the news in Los Angeles sometime. There is a difference between intrusive imagery and scene documentation. In this case, no individuals are identifiable. Outside of being able to recognize who's car it may be. Nothing about this video was illegal or unethical imo. The drone did not fly directly over victims, there were no TFRs in place, and there was no interference with emergency operations. As a Part 107 drone pilot and someone who captures damage scenes like this all year. The double standard needs to end on allowing it to be ok for the News but not a "storm chaser".

🌪️ Tornado Aftermath – I-57 South of Effingham, IL (02/19/26) 🚨 A possible tornado crossed I-57 south of Effingham, Illinois, on February 19, 2026, near Edgewood, causing multiple vehicles — including cars and semi-trucks — to be blown off the roadway and severely damaged. Several individuals sustained serious injuries and were transported to the hospital by ambulance. All victims were alive at the scene. The incident led to major traffic disruptions, with I-57 backed up for several hours as emergency crews responded and cleared the area. Contact Curtislergner@gmail.com for licensing. FYI: I want to clarify that recording accident scenes and storm damage is legal, and Illinois State Police did not raise any concerns about my filming. As a storm chaser, documenting severe weather, damage, and related incidents — including rescues — has been part of my work for over 10 years. The individual involved in this incident was alive at the time, and the purpose of the video was to inform the public about a serious accident, injuries, and traffic impacts following a tornado-warned storm.I chose to remove the video out of respect for the family after being contacted, not because I was required to do so. Fellow professional chasers have also confirmed that the footage was legal and appropriate. My focus remains on responsibly chasing storms, documenting severe weather, and providing accurate reporting to the public. #Illinois #ILwx #Tornado #I57 #EffinghamIL #EdgewoodIL #SevereWeather #StormDamage #TrafficAlert #WeatherNews

@KCTV5 And they had how much warning that it was going to snow? That fault falls on the church. Its their responsibility. Im sure it wasnt a surprize that their main guy was going out of town.

I’m going to take ownership for my actions earlier. it’s the right thing to do. Clearing those red lights was foolish, and while I proceeded with extreme caution, that does not make it okay. As I reflect back on what I could’ve done better, an easy decision would’ve been to just stop and put my drone in the air, and honestly, I’m shocked I didn’t do that because I usually prioritize aerial footage. Adrenaline is weird. Something about being 100 yards from a tornado does something to you, and honestly, I can’t figure out what made me chase like that; I’ve never done it before. There were 100 safer options, and I failed to execute. I will learn from this mistake and continue to set a positive example for all the young folks that watch my channel. I am sorry.
