I’ll always champion peaceful protest. But the Unite the Kingdom march organisers are peddling hatred and division. We’ve already blocked visas for far-right agitators who want to come here to spew their extremist views. They don't speak for the decent, fair, respectful Britain I know.

During the Corona pandemic, I thought they were handling the crisis better than other countries. But now: prison sentences for thought crimes. Instead of criminals, those who defend themselves against the perpetrators are being arrested. Entry bans and now facial recognition at the upcoming #UniteTheWest mass demonstration on Saturday. Most Europeans laugh at Americans for not understanding their own political system. Fair enough. But most Europeans have no idea of how undemocratically our own system works. But they argue with spitting mouth, but they defend it blindly. As they expect it. You have never voted for the President of the European Commission. Not once. You cannot. Ursula von der Leyen, the person who controls a budget larger than most countries on earth, who negotiates trade deals, who sanctions nations, who decides energy policy for 450 million people was selected in a private meeting between heads of state. No campaign. No mandate. No democratic process. Just a room of politicians you barely voted for, choosing someone you never did. That is not a flaw in the system. That is the system. The European Parliament, the one body you actually elect cannot propose legislation. Only the Commission can. Your elected representatives can debate, amend, and occasionally reject. But they cannot initiate. The power to set the agenda belongs permanently to an unelected body. This is called the democratic deficit, and it was built in deliberately, because the people who designed this institution never intended it to be fully democratic. They intended it to be manageable. And while you were busy being told that corruption is something that happens in Hungary, in Romania, in countries that "aren't really European", the unelected Commission that lectures everyone else about rule of law was deleting text messages about a €35 billion vaccine deal, building a €577 billion fund that its own auditors cannot trace, and reappointing the person at the centre of both without consequence. American propaganda is loud and obvious. You can see it coming. European institutional propaganda is quiet, technical, and wrapped in the language of democracy, transparency, and values. It works precisely because it sounds like the opposite of propaganda. You are not more informed than Americans because you live in Europe. You are differently manipulated. And the system doing it is considerably more sophisticated. Learn, not hate. Educate yourself of the truth they hide from you.
