Rightoid morons are so engrossed in their culture war obsessions that they can't stop viewing all the historical events through that lens. Yes, fuckwad, Algerian war of independence was about immigration, WWI was about feminism and the French revolution was about trans athletes

Algerians when Algeria became 13% French: “We should kill all the French.” The Pope: “That was good.” Frenchmen when France becomes 13% Algerian: “We should slow down the rate at which we accept more Algerians.” The Pope: “This is evil.”

@EmmaMAshford @70sBachchan Robin used to be a run of the mill fintwit nerd, but somewhere along the way (as the German electorate moved right I guess), he really gone off the rails

This phrase drives me crazy. What does it mean to say "a gas station masquerading as a country"? Does it mean that the millions of people who live in these states don't have lives, hopes, preferences? That any state whose primary export is oil is meaningless?

@matthew_petti Or it's the other way around? BWS is the reaction to ATW. Most BWS I've encountered are mad at ATW for not recognizing their natural superiority within the hierarchy of their home countries (eg think secularists in Turkey), so they gravitate towards the people who love hierarchy

TV viewers might recall the spate of fake Bernies (think Gil Eavis on SUCCESSION) and fake AOCs (such as Victoria Neuman on THE BOYS) on shows a few years back. By my math, we’re less than 12 months away from a buzzy streaming show with a fake Zohran, mark my words.

@KaiserKuo well, 80 years later and the Swiss Guard outnumber the entire Soviet military, a good lesson to remember for the USA

@NewLeftEViews I don't know how to phrase this without sounding like a religious zealot, but regardless of what happens in the next 1, 15, 25 or 100 years, one thing is for certain - the Catholic Church will outlive the entity called 'the United States of America'

@andfogle @ProgDirectorate Maybe an example out of a left field, but the 'opposition' in Azerbaijan also thought that once Aliyev defeated Armenia, he will be confident enough in his organic popularity to go for a political reform. Well, that didn't exactly work out

optimistic case for Iranians is that a leadership confident in having rebuffed the final regime change war and having wrested some sanctions relief will finally relent on pointlessly aggrieving domestic policy. After failed insurrection and war there will be arrests, executions and expropriations but this is also a chance to forge a new social contract. People will call this Reformism by other means (maybe not even by Eslahtalabs) and it pretty much is, but given that the theory of change where the US does it all it can to immiserate and accelerate crisis toward a final showdown or defections/coup has failed, is it not the best hope?
