Opinion - Fortnite's heart died today ✏️ "I’ll miss [working on] Fortnite Battle Royale," one Epic employee said after being laid off. It’s estimated that over 1,000 workers - roughly a quarter of Epic Games’ workforce - were laid off today. In the coming days, there will be many questions about Fortnite’s future. A future that will almost certainly look different without so many of the people who helped build it. Just to name a few: - Christopher Pope, a Battle Royale Design Director, said they’ll “miss Fortnite Battle Royale, but I’ll miss you all most of all.” In the replies, another employee said Pope had been making plans for the future of BR “mere moments” before being laid off. - Evan Kinney, the principal engineer behind Fortnite’s earliest live events, Replay Mode, and systems like the Rivalry feature. - Paige Dugre, art producer for Chapter 6 Season 3, the Simpsons mini-season, Chapter 7 Season 2, and collaborations like KPop Demon Hunters. Earlier this month, Jonah Kettman, a QA engineer on Fortnite Festival, defended Epic’s decision to raise V-Bucks prices, noting that “the quickest way to lower expenses is layoffs.” Kettman was laid off today—less than a week after paying a $4,000 vet bill for their cat. - Devin Connors, a community manager at Psyonix, widely respected within the Rocket League community. - Nik Blahunka, a lead writer behind many of Fortnite’s defining stories since 2017. - Vitaliy Naymushin, character art director who helped shape icons like Jonesy, Ramirez, Penny, and Kyle. Fortnite is the people behind it. And today, many of those people are gone.

Perhaps the saddest thing about the @EpicGames layoffs is that in, what.. 3 days…? Nobody will be talking about it, and 1000 folks will be scrambling for work. It didn’t matter if you had been there 20 years and worked on all the Gears games as well as @Fortnite. You got an email and were suddenly unemployed.

Reminder that working in the Game Industry is hell and all you get online is hate for it anyway from people who've never done anything creative in their entire lives and then you get fired out of nowhere by executives who's never done anything creative in their entire lives

Sadly I was impacted by todays layoffs at Epic. Still processing as I just found out like 20 minutes ago. Probably going to jump straight into the job hunt... if anybody has any leads for Environment Art roles I would greatly appreciate it.

In the coming days, employers will see a stream of resumes of once-in-a-lifetime quality folks. An important thing to understand is that Epic never lowered our hiring standards as we grew, and the layoff wasn't a performance-based "rightsizing" as companies call it nowadays. It's a sound bet that anyone with Epic Games on their resume is in the top few percent of their discipline.

@KraigLooney I was in the layoff meeting. Most of the execs were web browsing and zoned out, couldn’t give 10m of focus to the 1000 people watching them.

Nearly 2,000 layoffs in less than 3 years and not a single person from the leadership team has been affected or voluntarily stepped out. These outcomes are their failure and their failure alone.

When one of my children was 2, he dropped a carrot on the floor and refused to pick it up. He was told he would not be allowed to do anything fun or have any privileges until he picked up the carrot. He refused for hours. He cried and screamed. He even napped, woke up, and continued to refuse. His commitment was impressive. We held fast. Until he picked up the carrot, he would receive nothing other than water and basic food to live. After over 4 hours, he picked up the carrot and apologized. It's the longest he's fought us to this day. Disobedience is a choice of parents. You get the behavior that you tolerate.
