India is investing ₹1.27 lakh crore in R&D. So why is Deeptech still struggling to scale? Despite the momentum, R&D intensity remains at just 0.64–0.65% of GDP, and private sector contribution is only 36–37% , well below global benchmarks. The gap isn’t capability. It’s connection. At the roundtable ‘Industry-Led Deeptech R&D: Building Functional Bridges Between Corporate Innovation and Academic Research’ at #NTLF2026, one theme stood out: we are not short of research, we are short of translation. Here’s what we heard: → Industry needs clearer, problem-focused research engagement. Collaborations work best when corporates present specific technical challenges with clear success criteria and timelines. → Expectation alignment is essential. Industry prioritises commercial readiness and speed. Academia emphasises knowledge creation and learning. Without shared frameworks, outcomes are mismatched. → Different outputs require different models. Advancing science and achieving commercial deployment are distinct goals and benefit from distinct funding, governance, and measurement approaches. → Contracting and IP processes delay collaboration. Slow legal processes, prolonged negotiations, and bespoke IP terms increase friction and reduce enthusiasm on both sides. → Technology transfer capacity is uneven. Many academic institutions lack structured innovation management processes or tech transfer support, particularly outside leading research universities. → Funding gaps limit scale-up. Early-stage research often progresses to prototype, but translational and commercialisation funding remains limited, stalling promising work. → Discovery of research capabilities is difficult. Corporates face challenges in identifying appropriate labs, facilities, expertise, and TRL maturity across the academic ecosystem. → Policy incentives need clarification. Clear guidance on tax treatment for R&D collaborations, CSR eligibility for research funding, and incentives for commercialisation , not just patent filings, can unlock greater participation. → Pre-competitive collaboration can build trust. Working on common early-stage research challenges (TRL 0–3) without immediate IP contention can create shared artifacts and reduce friction. → A systemic playbook can accelerate collaborations. Standardised templates for NDAs, MOUs, IP arrangements, capability directories, and shared frameworks will make industry–academia collaboration more predictable and repeatable. The R&D investment is there. The talent is there. The research is there. What's missing is the connective tissue. What has worked for you in bridging industry and academia and what hasn’t? @nasscom @nasscomai @sangeetagupta29 @ShaliniDewan @nhl_pandya @mayankkumar_17 #IndustryAcademia #RD #Innovatio #DeepTechIndia #NasscomDeeptech #ResearchAndInnovation #TechTransfer
