Listed in Leicester Crown Court on Monday there are: 9 trials; 22 other hearings; and 19 further cases that have to be adjourned, due to a lack of court time. 1 court out of 7 is not sitting. Juries are not the problem.

Dear @DavidLammy I had a trial today at Woolwich CC which couldn’t go ahead due to no prosecution counsel being available. Trial now 2027. How does getting rid of juries for certain cases fix the lack of prosecutors….asking for a friend Kind regards Natalie Berman

We were told that the right to trial by jury for many cases must be abolished because of the criminal cases backlog. But @DavidLammy just confirmed in Parliament that even without any backlog, "it's not my expectation that these rules will change". So this isn't about backlog. This lawyer-heavy Gov't wants to limit jury trial as a matter of principle. And - as a matter of principle - that's wrong.

It is pure evil to take a mother and her young children and an elderly man hostage. It takes another layer of evil to be responsible for their deaths. And yet a further layer of evil to trade their bodies to release hundreds of prisoners including terrorists serving life sentences for murder. This is what Israel is up against. People proposing any curtailment of the right to jury trial (for what is essentially convenience to shift the backlog) should be asked: If you were wrongly accused of a crime would you want the verdict - your verdict- determined by a judge & magistrates? Instead of 12 citizens?
