Rey showed the same kind of raw power fans celebrate in so many male characters, yet she was judged far more harshly by so many. A lot of fans would’ve responded very differently to the sequels if Rey had been a man.

@SharkBook1 Even then, Rey only gains the upper hand because of the state that Kylo is in. Also Kylo is not a Sith Lord. I don’t know why people are keep saying he is. lol 🤷

@SharkBook1 That argument ignores the actual context of the fight. Rey didn’t overpower Kylo at his peak. He had just been shot by Chewie’s bowcaster, was emotionally shattered after killing Han, and was explicitly trying to recruit her rather than kill her.

Rey beating Kylo in Force Awakens is one of the worst writing decisions made during the sequel era and cemented her as a Mary Sue to the general audience and fandom. Both Luke and Anakin got their ass beat the first time they fought a Sith Lord. Rey should’ve lost like them.

She wasn’t “handed” the victory. She grabbed both lightsabers and reflected the lightning back at Palpatine. She outsmarted him, and did so in a badass way

@kryzebuff Korra facing death ≠ Rey literally being revived and handed the victory for free. Like Korra isn’t a Mary Sue but Rey is and you should stop trying to defend her because you’re gonna end up insane

@FJDesanto Not really an assumption those themes are supported by what’s on screen. You may interpret it differently, but I think the film clearly presents those ideas. If you hate the films so much to where you tear ppl down for loving it then this will go nowhere. I love that for you. 🤷

Star Wars: The Last Jedi dared to challenge the idea that heroes have to be perfect. It gave us failure, growth, hope, and the message that anyone can matter in the galaxy. That’s why it still resonates with me years later. ❤️💙

@FJDesanto The movie literally connects Luke’s stand on Crait to the kids retelling the story afterward. That’s the film showing his actions inspiring people beyond the Resistance. You can think it wasn’t developed enough, but the theme itself is clearly there.

@nathanmaximoff_ How did it become "a legend?" Not on screen and certainly not something that's followed up on or clearly explained. The stable kids are vaguely showing Luke Skywalker doing something. Again you're explaining things that are actually not in the film

@nathanmaximoff_ When did he inspire the galaxy? No one was on crait. No one answers the call, so how is the galaxy inspired. Yet kids are talking about at the end which makes zero sense. Finns subplot is the same as first movie. Stable boy offers nothing to the larger story.

@nathanmaximoff_ Except it's not and you're explaining the intention. "Anyone can matter" yet no one does in this film. It's all so poorly conceived and written so thin people pretend to fill in the blanks in their heads because it's actually not there in the movie.

@madbagginsboy Whether people like the execution or not, neither character is portrayed as flawless. I still love their characters so much. No one is perfect and that’s okay. I think that’s what makes these characters feel more sincere and passionate to a lot of fans. (2/2)

@madbagginsboy Rey is impulsive, stubborn, and overly convinced she can redeem Kylo on her own, which directly backfires. Rose can be idealistic and emotional to a fault, especially with how strongly she reacts to injustice and loss. (1/2)

@FJDesanto I mean… failure, growth, hope, and “anyone can matter” are absolutely themes in the movie. Luke confronting his failures, Rey coming from nowhere, and the ending with the stable boy are pretty direct examples of that and more throughout the film. Pretty visible if you ask me. 🤷

@gandalf_reed Exactly!! People don’t have to agree with me, but the movie connected with me emotionally, and that’s what matters most in the end. I’ll always love what this movie was trying to represent.

@DntFwTexas Also, I get why people wanted that connection, but Rey searching for Luke still makes sense to me because she saw him as a mythic hero and the galaxy’s last hope, not because she secretly needed to be related to him.

@nathanmaximoff_ All they had to do is make Rey Luke's secret kid. Everything wouldve tied together. Her search for Luke wouldve made since.

@DntFwTexas I actually liked that Rey wasn’t secretly related to a legacy character for most of the trilogy. One of The Last Jedi’s biggest ideas was that greatness and heroism can come from anywhere, not just one bloodline. I liked the idea that someone ordinary could rise to become a hero.
