Judging by our local Facebook page, my wife and I are the only people who hate knitted postbox toppers. Surely, there must be some other jaundiced curmudgeons out there who loathe these naff additions to our love postboxes.

Going through some old photos, my wife's Scottish relatives revealed the sad story of Wee Jock. A dedicated family dog, Wee Jock went everywhere with his owners until they had to put him in kennels for a week. When they returned, he was so excited he had a heart attack and died.

Railway fans - what are these things that can be seen on the underside of station platforms in London and the SE (and presumably elsewhere)? I've sort of vaguely wondered for decades, but now that I'm hurtling towards the end of my life, I'd better clear this matter up.

On the train to Victoria, I heard a young local woman mention delays on the "Lizzie line." Is that now the common parlance for the Crossrail/Elizabeth line, or should I start getting her deportation papers ready?

There's a thin line between honouring the memory of your dead dad and seizing the opportunity for a mawkish display of grief over something that happened a long time ago. Unless your loss is recent let's celebrate our fathers in public and grieve in private. Am I being too harsh?

Can anyone identify this bird? I know pathetically little about our feathered friends and can no longer blame it on being a Londoner, as I've lived in Sussex for over 20 years. It looks like a fledgling, but I'm not even sure about that. My book on garden birds has drawn a blank.

It's weird how the City of London (i.e. the Square Mile, as opposed to the whole city) treats its Roman ruins. This one was tucked away next to an underground car park on one side and a locked gate on the other. It's all very downbeat, as if they're slightly embarrassed by them.

Today's comfort read, by Ellen Wood (aka Mrs Henry Wood): a novel about the joys of temperance. "More elderflower cordial, vicar?"

I'm off to the Barbican again tomorrow evening. I recently became a member, lured by the promise of discounted tickets and an exclusive members' area - a place that turned out to be a rather pokey bar where you're lucky if you can find a seat. I don't think I'll bother renewing.

@naylorq On a slight tangent, I asked an AI app to produce a "badly-drawn commemorative plate of King Charles III" and this is what I got:

I saw a truly awful late 17th century plate today, celebrating the coronation of William and Mary. It's comforting to see that even in the Baroque period - an age of exquisite craftsmanship - they could still churn out cheap crap like this.

In Chichester yesterday, I was admiring the 15th century Market Cross, built for the poor to sell their wares. Over five centuries on, it looks as if the tradition is being kept alive, although a rock of crack now costs a lot more than three groats.
