@SkySports_Keith Big Joe, Ramsey and Big Nick at 10. Should be more than enough to get the win. The Mackems are safe so like all players at similar clubs mentally trying to keep fit and fresh for the World Cup.

We are not doing ourselves any favours by continuing to refer to gravity and evolution as "theories" as to many people don't understand. Just call them "laws".

@Prosper_UK_ @DavidGauke The day Johnson threw Heseltine, Clarke et al out of the Tory party will be one of the most consequential in the political history of the 21st century. A shadow cabinet of Street, Stewart, and similar would likely be preparing for govt. in 2029

Political success in the UK has always depended on the centre ground. Labour’s victories have come when it has appealed beyond its base - and its defeats when it has not. For the Conservatives, the lesson is the same. Winning again will require a return to broad, pragmatic and pro-growth politics.

The speed limit for motorways / dual carriageways should be 60mph. Safer and more fuel efficient than driving at 70mph and, at a mile a minute, easy to estimate journey times.

@henrywinter A cynic might suggest that this decision is a line in the sand for the City charges. They got away with it for being helpful. City lawyers appear to have tied everybody up in knots for 2-3 years and counting.

At some point, senior Premier League execs have to offer a proper explanation in public for their leniency towards Chelsea. They owe an explanation to fans of clubs punished more harshly. They owe an explanation to those clubs who did abide by the rules. They have to offer some explanation as to why PSR breaches are deemed far more serious than acts of "deception and concealment". Yes, these are the offences of a previous regime at Chelsea. But inconsistencies run through the PL's defence and their reputation is damaged. They can’t hide from a controversy of this magnitude.

@afneil Curious to know your view, is Europe stagnating because of the EU, or despite it? Demographics suggest the economic history of the 21st century will revolve more around the Indian Ocean than the North Atlantic.

Also the most backward. It assumes we must more closely align with the EU again because it remains a great economic success story when the reality is it’s a bloc in long-term, systemic and increasing decline. A mid-tech backwater which is nowhere in AI or any other major development of the digital economy (in which the UK is doing rather well). Labour’s strange, nostalgic, outdated obsession with Europe is reminiscent of the Old Tory Colonel Blimps and their longing to recreate the British Empire.
George Eaton@georgeeaton

Reeves says in her Mais lecture that “Brexit did deep damage” and that “our fate as a country is inescapably bound with that of Europe”, vowing to make the case for closer alignment. This is the most pro-European speech a cabinet minister has given since 2016.

@lancstic @Archway_Andy @PippaCrerar We needed someone to grease the wheels. We chose one of the slippiest characters we could find. Easy to see how Starmer et al talked themselves into thinking it was a good idea, and just as easy to say in hindsight that they should have seen this coming.

@Archway_Andy @PippaCrerar Given his history, he most likely was. That’s the point, you don’t appoint someone so unscrupulous with his known paedophilia links to a job so prestigious. You clearly would, so you should be looking inward & asking yourself why.

Keir Starmer admits his decision to appoint Peter Mandelson despite being warned about his r'ship with Jeffrey Epstein is "a question of my judgement". But he doesn't answer Kemi Badenoch's question about whether he spoke *personally* to Mandelson about it before appointing him Washington ambassador. #PMQs

@SkySports_Keith At the moment we're missing our first choice midfield and no striker. Need a GL who's a worldie, not just v.good. love big Dan, but... Scores disappointing, but that's where we are. Top 20 in Europe, but a long way off the top half dozen.

Ed Davey's problem is his 'larking around' won't work a second time. In 1992 people found John Major's soap-box gimmick wholesome and charming. When he tried it again in 1997 they were going 'Oh fuck off with your poxy soap-box'.

@UnderSneege @JohnRentoul I use Rumsfeld when doing probation with all new staff. Day 1 you don't know what you don't know. About 6 months in and there's still an annoying pile of known unknowns. 1 year in and you're heading up the J curve as most things are now known knowns.

Rumsfeld “known knowns” speech is up there with Michael Gove’s expert comment as one of the most unfairly maligned political statements in my lifetime. "I think the people in this country have had enough of experts... from organisations with acronyms saying that they know what is best and getting it consistently wrong”
Legal Phil@Legal_Fil

The fact that people still make fun of Rumsfeld for concisely explaining how rational decisionmakers should proceed is one of the great examples of bias making people looks like fools.

@resfoundation @Kevin_Maguire CT is still progressive within Local Authorities, although the ratios from Band D base could be tweaked. Issue is comparing between LAs. This could be fixed by adjusting government grant. Add a net neutral regional adjustment to the formula and it becomes nationally progressive.

The totality of direct taxes in the UK is progressive; the very richest pay more than five times more in income tax than the poorest. In contrast, Council Tax remains strongly regressive, absorbing only about 1 per cent of income at the very top, against nearly 5 per cent at the very bottom.

Finnish president Alexander Stubb @alexstubb speaking at LSE in London: “I think #Brexit was obviously a huge mistake, one of the biggest that we've seen in recent history. My sort of tongue-in-cheek comment is that it took you seven years to negotiate out. It'll take you seven years to regret and then another seven years to get in again. It will happen or not, I don’t know”. 🇬🇧 🇪🇺 🇫🇮

It’s hardly my job to defend @TiceRichard. But there is nothing wrong with legal tax avoidance. Legal tax avoidance is what you do when you buy an ISA. If you dislike the specific arrangements he had, change the rules. But don’t complain that he was following existing rules.

Spot on. We’ve come to fetishise “local representatives” far too much, a symptom of our politics becoming smaller and more parochial. What we need is quality national politicians. If they have to be “parachuted” in, and they spend more time in SW1 than the constituency, so be it.
