Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji'un I am deeply saddened by the news of Ambassador Mohammed Omer's passing. He was a towering figure in #Eritrean diplomacy and a true embodiment of our national values. He was the kindest and most empathetic person I met in my career. His door was always open to everyone. He listened to every concern with compassion and could be moved to tears by the suffering of others. Ambassador Mohammed Omer deeply believed in the potential of young people. He was a true mentor to many of us, often expecting more from us than we expected of ourselves. He created a safe space where we could learn, make mistakes, and grow. I first met Ambassador Mohammed Omer in 2000, when I was a student at the University of Asmara. I had asked to interview him for a paper on Middle Eastern politics. Looking back, I now realize how naïve my questions were—but he listened patiently and gently guided me. That conversation marked the beginning of a relationship that would profoundly shape me as a person, a public servant, and a diplomat. Over the years, I had the privilege of working with him in various capacities and of listening to him graciously recount the history of the student movement and Eritrean foreign relations—both before and after independence. Rest in peace, Ambassador. Your legacy will endure in every life you touched. ሓርበኛ ኣይነብርን'ዩ ታሪኹ'ዩ ዝውረስ!!

#Eritrea: A Nation Forged Through Struggle (Part II); by Bana Negusse From the Annals of Contemporary History "...Indeed, if Eritrea was denied the right of decolonization in the first place in the 1940s, the international community’s complicity by its silence when the bogus “Federal Act” was wilfully and utterly abrogated by the Ethiopian regime, nudged them to resort to armed struggle as the only option for regaining their inalienable national rights and human dignity". shabait.com/2025/05/21/eri…

#Eritrea: a nation forged through struggle (Part III & Final); by Bana Negusse *Shortly after the EPLF victoriously rolled into Asmara in 1991, preparations were begun to conduct an internationally supervised referendum as the final diplomatic thread in Eritrea’s long and arduous struggle to assert its inalienable right of decolonization. On 29 May, Isaias Afwerki, then Secretary-General of the EPLF, called upon the UN to, “shoulder its moral responsibilities [to help conduct a free and fair referendum on Eritrea’s self-determination] without further delay”. *Eritrea’s path to independence stands as one of the most determined and resilient liberation movements of the 20th century. Against overwhelming odds and the indifference of the global community, Eritreans fought, endured, and triumphed. Their final victory was not merely the toppling of an occupationist regime but the fulfillment of a collective dream long dismissed as impossible. *The legacy of Eritrea’s liberation war continues to shape its national identity. It serves as a stark reminder of the costs of freedom and the enduring power of a people united in pursuit of justice and sovereignty. shabait.com/2025/05/26/eri…
