Not the spiciest of takes, but if you’re an adult male, under no circumstances should you accept being ‘Lil’ anything. Little is fine as a way to differentiate between a relative nicknamed Big of the same name. But if it’s further apart than uncle, it gets dodgy.

I do have to give credit to the Pittsburgh Pirates for an awesome City Connect uniform.

By now you’ve probably seen the reports: despite hundreds of millions of dollars spent—and repeated assurances that Los Angeles had turned a corner—unsheltered homelessness increased by nearly 8% in this city. That is a moral outrage. And it is a failure of leadership. Homelessness is not an unsolvable problem. It's a mismanaged one. In my district, we are moving decisively in the opposite direction. While unsheltered homelessness rose citywide, the number of unsheltered people directly counted in my district fell by 49%. And that is because we took a different approach. We track every case, break through the barriers holding up placements, connect people with housing and care, and stay involved until they are housed. As mayor, I will bring that approach—and those results—citywide.

That was different. So I’m changing at the gym, and a guy walks over to one of the the lockers on the same short wall I used. I move out of the way, as I’m pretty much dressed and ready to go. I usually like to sit and check social media for a minute, just as part of the cool down, but I figure I can give him some privacy and just leave. The dude is muttering to himself the entire time as he opens the locker, pulls out a gym bag and proceeds to fill it with five or six empty energy drink cans. That’s it. Just empty cans. And then he leaves, still muttering. Maybe that much caffeine had him seeing other realities or something.

An Australian economist just went on PBD and told young people not to have children — and to learn how to hunt because climate change will cause civilization to collapse. This is the Malthusian doomerism @elonmusk keeps warning about. Paul Ehrlich said the same thing in 1968. Predicted mass starvation by the 1980s. Wrong. Meanwhile the actual crisis is already here: — USA birth rate: 1.6 — Germany: 1.4 — England: 1.39 — Japan: 1.15 — South Korea: 0.75 Replacement rate is 2.1. Not a single major Western nation is close. Do the opposite of what @ProfSteveKeen says. Have two kids. Preferably three. Having children is the greatest source of joy and purpose a human being can experience. The greatest threat to Western civilization isn't the climate. It's that we got talked out of the most important thing in life.

It's insulting to 3rd World countries to call LA 3rd World. Open-air drug use at a park where people should be able to take their kids. For the life of me, I will never understand how civilized people tolerate this bullshit in their city.

@DieinPlace Pre-TSA. You could hold your mother's hand while she walked you to the gate to see your father off on a business trip. Despite the ash trays in the arm rests, it was a more civilized era of flying.

@St_Rev @hradzka To paraphrase, imperialism is white men in boats. Change who is in the boat, and magically it’s no longer imperialism.

Illinoisans are flooding county board meetings over skyrocketing power bills and nonstop data center noise. And now Pritzker is feeling the heat. When I'm governor, you won't have to storm a meeting to be heard. My door will be open.

It’s the ‘poison Skittle’ thought experiment all over again. If 5% are bad, and you can’t tell, how do you respond? My dad is retired law enforcement, and a cousin’s husband. I have friends in law enforcement. The DJ at my wedding was a cop who did that as a side gig. I’m almost as pro-law enforcement as you can get without being in the field. And if I was to be crime-adjacent sufficiently to be asked to come in to talk? I’m bringing a lawyer because I’ve seen too many cases of lazy officers railroading innocent people.

@geoffs73 True. Which is unfortunate. Because one cop can quite literally ruin it for the 95+% of cops who are good.

So, for you Flockers out there. Or DeFlockers, as it were- Here in central Florida, we had a sheriff's deputy arrested for misusing Flock and other investigative tools to go after her ex-husband. The deputy even went as far to create false records to make the use of the tools look valid. Sumter County had an audit to discover this abuse. And she was not only fired, but arrested. It makes you wonder how many of these situations go undetected. And of course, what the private companies, like Flock, are able to do with the information. While Flock is going to take a lot of flack here (see what I did there?!), these types of abuses are not too uncommon. Fortunately, there are already many safeguards to identify those who abuse access to sensitive information. We see it a lot with medical records. Where someone in a hospital, for example, pulls up the medical records of someone famous to share with the public. Fortunately, hospital systems track when users access files, and those people are usually held accountable. Even in the legal world. In many large firms, such as mine, we are able to track who is touching files in the system. Every time you view or edit a document, it logs the user. This is important when you have high-profile cases, to prevent a nosey or curious person from being somewhere they shouldn't (also these systems help protect our own butts for having an accountability system to preserve attorney-client privilege, and other privileges).
