@TafferKing451 Played Thief 2 again recently. The bank and police station levels are a masterclass in design. Especially on the hardest difficulty

On the topic of references for bank, this trap in First City Bank and Trust was always hilarious to me.

@Farenain @pikuma Might check that one out! Thanks! For me I wanted to relearn asm by building the compiler but there were definitely frustrations in some of the Frontend design I’d like to see addressed.

@neildanson I like the point of implementing a real language, but I'd like to check "Crafting Interpreters" to see how it addresses these points. Just to compare two books that are more or less new. Probably @pikuma can recommend others (aside from the Dragon book).

Don't you think the book "Writing a C Compiler" sometimes fails due to over simplifying? In the chapter 11, the book adds the long type, this is included with the type systems and included as a type in the AST nodes. Next, why I think the book has some bad design decisions.

Big teaser but I've been working on a 'boomer shooter creator'. It comes with a sprite editor, a sound creator, a map editor and even visual scripting. You can create/play games, share them on Steam Workshop or... export to Godot! ✨ More on that soon.

@davepl1968 Well I did pay for it. So surely it’s mine and they shouldn’t shovel adds and ai into it without my permission?

Would you pay for a subscription to a "Windows Professional" if it included NO telemetry, ads, sponsored links, or upsells, bloat, or junk? Clearly, they have to make money. Today, however, it seems everything is predicated on monetizing the customer post-purchase. And that's largely because people don't pay for Windows. Put another way, if Windows were clean and didn't include any bloat or upsell, would you actually pay for it?

@dustedcodes Hard agree, but also things like Java spring boot which is equally fragile and arguably more “magic” or even rust macros. Explicit > implicit every day of the week especially when it comes to maintenance

The very first line captures everything I dislike about .NET. No C# developer actually knows what this one magic line does. It configures a shitload of magic stuff there and nobody knows what it is. Literally every .NET dev just hopes it works for them and when it doesn’t they jump between 20 different StackOverflow threads and try 20 different builder permutations until it somehow works for them. Then when it finally does they get build errors because that builder function which finally worked is from .NET 7 and now in .NET whatever-fucking-version-it-is-today, it’s meant to be initialised differently and then they are back to StackOverflow again. That’s how C# devs spend 4 hours just fucking around being unproductive because the magic always stops working at some point and then there is nothing left but a shit show.

@games_rozz @games_rozz been a follower a while and bought on 1st day of early access. Not played for a while in anticipation of all the things I see on here. What you have built is spectacular and you can feel all the hard work that has gone into to this labour of love. Kudos!

@cmuratori @mayank_jee @Wassimulator Imagine a computer that you switch on, and it boots up near instantly, and you can just get on and do what you want without tending to its needs. Strange thing is, smartphones seem to have achieved this.

@TheTommyCannon @ITVX I put this on last night and me and the kids were in fits. Saw you and Bobby many moons ago in Chatham with the wife (who was dragged reluctantly) and were both in tears. Thank you for the laughs.

@dhh Tried many things that didn’t work, but I try not to dismiss them. Don’t have time/ability to pursue everything I want to, but also don’t have enough ego to think if I couldn’t do it then no one could. Trying and failing is good tho - helps you appreciate others success

People dismiss so many good ideas with "we tried that, didn't work", only to be proven wrong by someone with enough determination and the right angle. Turns out we DID need another Linux distro 😄🚀
