Twenty years ago, on our honeymoon, Maria and I were newlyweds at a General Audience with Pope Benedict XVI. Last Wednesday, 20 May, we were privileged to meet His Holiness Pope Leo XIV. We thanked him for seeing us and asked him to pray for us, our family, and for Ireland.

The first time I heard something like this I was 22 and just happened to walk into a cathedral while in France. They were only practicing and it literally stopped me in my tracks. It was like heaven opened up. How did Catholics trade this for what sounds like bad 70s music?

Well, I think we can all agree that that was pretty inspiring.

I don’t vote in, let alone endorse candidates in, Irish elections, but Maria is a great and thoughtful person whose candidacy would elevate the debate and inspire many along the way.
