Explanation for those who care:
Henna is a plant-derived dye that is commonly used for temporary skin decoration.
The active ingredient in henna is lawsone, which binds to and stains the outer layer of skin.
For most people, henna is safe and does not cause any reactions.
However, for a small number of people, topical application of henna can cause allergic contact dermatitis (skin reaction).
Why it happens:
- Allergic reaction:
Some people develop an allergic sensitivity or contact allergy to ingredients in henna over time and with repeated exposure.
Common allergens include lawsone, essential oils or other botanical additives. This causes an immune reaction with redness, swelling, itching, etc.
- Irritant reaction:
Henna may directly irritate the skin of some people, especially if left on too long.
This can cause redness, peeling, bumps or blisters.
- Contaminants:
Low quality “black henna” often contains hair dye additives like paraphenylenediamine (PPD) which can cause severe allergic reactions in some people.
FAQs:
Q: Who is at highest risk of reaction?
A: Those with existing allergies, sensitive skin, or who get henna frequently are at highest risk. First-time and occasional users rarely react.
Q: What does an allergic reaction look like?
A: Redness, swelling, small bumps, weeping/oozing, crusting or blisters may appear on or around the tattooed area, usually peaking 1-3 days after application. Itching is common.
Q: How is it treated?
A: Avoid henna in the future. Reaction symptoms can be managed with topical corticosteroids, oral antihistamines and proper wound care to prevent infection. See a doctor if severe.
Q: How can reactions be prevented?
A: Do a skin patch test first. Check ingredient quality - 100% natural henna is best. Follow instructions carefully and avoid leaving paste on too long. Allow skin to fully heal between applications. Use cautiously with existing allergies or skin conditions.
