SpaceX and the Polaris Dawn crew have completed the first commercial spacewalk! “SpaceX, back at home we all have a lot of work to do, but from here, Earth sure looks like a perfect world.” — Mission Commander @rookisaacman during Dragon egress and seeing our planet from ~738 km

New paper from the lab! As we started using neural networks to recognize sleep states, an unexpected finding was the presence of "flickers" between states on the order of milliseconds and across independent regions. Really glad to be a part of this work! nature.com/articles/s4159…

@bsauerbrei1 This is excellent. I tried to do something like this for my lab when I was a grad student but it was crudely drawn on a sticky note. This seems a lot more sustainable 😊

How the lab works. As we plan new projects, capabilities, and rig upgrades, I thought it would be useful to map this out.

@JasterAlaina Seems logical since IEGs are necessary for Bdnf expression and 2A agonists thought to induce Bdnf. When I was a postbac we looked at another IEG Egr3 and its role in inducing Bdnf after ECS. Would imagine these pathways are related frontiersin.org/articles/10.33…

@maybeadoc1983 @DouglasAdlerMD Humor between colleagues as a coping mechanism is one thing. But isn't it a little inhumane to post this publicly and request retweets? It comes off as short of bragging. If I were a patient in that ICU or family member of patient I would not want to see this.

@MalekaniMD @DouglasAdlerMD Not everything has to be a social justice crusade. I'm to the left of Lenin but also not a douchebag about it. Part of being human is finding the silver lining in tragedies. Let them have their fun.

@bita137 For sure. Seems like a short sighted strategy for the field to put all our eggs in one basket.

I worry that all the hype and excitement over #psychedelics advancing psychiatry is going to diminish resources and interest for major psychiatric disorders like schizophrenia and bipolar, treatment for which has remained stagnant for decades

Check out the preprint for my main PhD project🥳 we find that a strong negative experience can update memories from DAYS ago, and this updating happens during rest periods shortly after the negative experience. We think this is one way animals make causal inferences across days!

CAI LAB PREPRINT🧠! In a team effort led by @mysteriousjoe_, we found that rest periods after learning not only stabilize new memories BUT ALSO integrate new memories with older memories from days past! 1/n biorxiv.org/content/10.110…

@arjunrajlab the answers here are good. on the flip side, what students don’t want is to be churned out like they’re in a degree factory. intellectual engagement and investment in their careers should be the minimum

Interesting responses :) (Yes, duh, I know it’s meant to vet me, not vice versa.) My question: exactly what do students want from this meeting? What question would you ask and what responses would influence your decision? A “vibe” can be highly misleading…
Arjun Raj@arjunrajlab

Not sure who is giving this guidance, but PhD students: we don't need to meet to discuss whether or not I should be on your thesis committee. Just send a description of what you do and why I might be helpful. I can decide based on that.

@arjunrajlab I’ve had these meetings and explained what I was planning to propose. Faculty often then told me which parts of the project they felt they could support me in and which parts might benefit from a committee member with different expertise, as well as offering scientific feedback.

@arjunrajlab Every member on my committee consistently made time for me to meet with them outside committee meetings. If you can’t schedule one in person meeting, maybe you are not ready for the responsibility of thesis committee mentorship.
