the fact that spell check red squiggles cyclohexamide should've been my first red flag, but in biology... there's just so many amides.................

you can spend hours and hours double checking a script for accuracy, only to confidently say "cyclohexamide" in a video where it should be "cycloheximide" SMH my head

@rikosiempre it is tough! i like to keep in mind that an audience who clicked on your video already paid the "entry fee" and is probably ready for some high level stuff!

@neutralphil I think respecting your audience's intelligence goes a long way. At the same time, I want to do my best to to ensure whatever I talk about is digestible enough for a layperson. It's a tough balance sometimes.

recently took a poll of my audience to see what the distribution of biology education was like amongst them. 52% coming from high school or below was shocking, but also very exciting - audiences are capable of taking on much more depth and nuance than I think people assume!

@NicoNicoplasma i love the art of it all - playing with "appreciation" as a different but related metric to "understanding" is the difference between edutainment and formal education

@neutralphil i think my audience likely has a similar breakdown just based on the comments i get! there's a lot of curiosity that i love seeing it also makes for writing my scripts to communicate content a lot more interesting as i start to really think about the whys and whats

@EthanLac13 it very much is my personal taste! i've not had too many classes in ecology, much of my exposure has been through seminars / lectures, and while I thought the material was very cool, it didn't rip me away onto a different professional path the way the top tiers here did!

@neutralphil I'm curious why you have ecology so low. It feels like a discipline that's applicable in many different areas of life, not just biology.

@vixxykon @rikosiempre i never finished my phd - i don't feel like an expert in anything, but because of that i am extra careful to dot my "i"s and cross my "t's and i think that's made me a better communicator! sorry i just want to yell at everybody who wants to do sci com to do it HAHA

@vixxykon @rikosiempre also, students are far closer to the basics of the material than experts are - i couldn't tell you how to resolve a holiday junction, calculate recombination frequency, or calculate an inbreeding coefficient

Sometimes i feel like im larping being into science but im literally studying it in college so like Something something imposter syndrome

@vixxykon @rikosiempre every individual is a unique voice nobody has heard before! the student perspective is also a unique one. if you push yourself to make sci-com content, you will be practicing all of the skills required to think critically about science (the primary one being hedging)
