@alcibiades5410 @nikicaga It's useful because most people don't have any sense of relative scale. When you zoom out to compare it to other industries, the water usage is still small.

@nikicaga You're comparing the entire agricultural process to only the final step of the LLM process, do you really not realize how silly that is?

@hecubian_devil At a certain level, the talk of a bubble popping is mostly therapeutic for a certain type of poster who has been negatively polarized against tech. Especially when a pop would just allow Google to consolidate the AI space, seeing as how they made over 100B in profit last year.

@hecubian_devil OpenAI shutting down Sora should update you away from thinking it's a bubble; they found something more useful to do with those GPUs, so we should expect more powerful AI tools than previously predicted to be on the way

@scottynukeop @ExistentialEnso It's because over 1/3 of all US corn production is used for fuel, and roughly 3/4 of all corn production in Nebraska is irrigated. The water used by AI workloads is very small in comparison, and newer purpose-built data centers are using closed-loop cooling either way.

@ExistentialEnso Okay, but you realize how they are two completely different things? Like, you can't eat AI. Hell, even some crops are not all that efficient but I don't remember anyone bringing up corn.

this makes no sense because intelligent people are using ai and unintelligent people are complaining about it and that implies the ones with brains are the ones that use ai and the ones without brains are the ones that dont

@valhalla_dev At this point I think the only protest with a chance of making real change is a full on general strike. Things will have to get much worse before the public has an appetite for that...which could happen as the market aftershocks of the Iran debacle hit people's wallets.

So we're doing No Kings 3 now and I still have complex feelings on it. I've been to some of them in my city, in the deepest red part of the country. My main question is: what are we trying to achieve here? Between each No Kings protest, there has been a very short period of media coverage of the protests and then... nothing. So capturing meaningful media coverage is clearly not working if that's an aim of anyone in the movement. The country has only become more authoritarian as the No Kings rallies have gone on. There will be people who will try to claim that the No Kings folks got ICE out of Minneapolis, but they'd largely be lying as that seems to have primarily been ineffective use of ICE + extremely capable, and often much more brazen and "radical", protests in Minneapolis and other cities that were not really attached to the No Kings protest movement. We're on the cusp of losing online anonymity, ICE is currently deploying to airports, we started a war in Iran, etc. I don't think there can really be a claim that the No Kings movement has meaningfully impacted policy in a measurable way. I have spoken before about there being a value to getting people who are otherwise not politically mobilized out in the street. I met a lot of Republicans who had never protested before at the rallies I went to. I'm not necessarily discounting that... but we're on the week of the third "mass rally event" under the No Kings name and I don't really see any sign that it's trying to become something more lasting than a weekend lib out event and some mailing lists.

@jothwip What about the companies who's entire models rely on AI and run millions of queries every hour? 🤨 And are we considering image and video generation? Individual prompt use isn't harmful really, the issue is corporate reliance and media generation.

@jothwip That's based on 2023 data, AI uses way more water now. And they're comparing it to the full lifecycle for beef, that includes grain, rainfall, etc. So this is extremely misleading.

Truly blown away by a new AI image model launching this week ✨ Finally, you can generate photos that actually look like you! It's so much better than everything I've tried - from LoRAs to NB Pro. Onboarding some early testers. DM or comment if you want access 👀

@atjustabowl @lippredicts Image models are counterintuitively more efficient than state of the art text models. Any gaming PC can run ComfyUI and start generating images locally on your own hardware.

@lippredicts you think people are generating *one* image any time they use chatgpt, etc.? They’re typing multiple prompts for one image as well as saying “that’s great, thanks!”. by the time they get one image they’re satisfied with we are 10+ prompts in lol.

@adelehaenelfan well yes but ai does more than just destroy our planet. and it’s MUCH easier to abstain from using chatgpt than change your entire diet or the fashion industry. obviously we should promote change overall but ai is useless and destructive and there’s no benefit to it.

@bdglacierguy @flackospalace Major cloud providers are signing large contracts for nuclear power and funding small modular reactor projects, while Google already has a significant mix of carbon-free power. I think you are right in the near term, but AI's emissions share is likely only around 1% by 2030.

@CantEverDie Showing water usage per query is also incredibly dishonest. It leaves out the training process which uses WAYYYYYY more water, and is necessary to generate answers to queries, you cannot decouple them

@new2posting @CantEverDie And it's still the wrong question. The vast majority of water usage comes from training, not individual queries.
