It feels surreal that this paper is finally out! Check out this great thread summarizing our work on the physics, physiology, and evolution of insect flight. So thankful to have been part of this amazing collaboration.

I’m excited to share our paper on the evolution, dynamics, and robophysics of insect flight that just came out in @Nature: rdcu.be/dnJlh This was a wonderful collaboration with the @ngravish lab and led by @Jeff_Gau, @braiello, @springsNwingsand @ethanswold (1/11)

Excited to have published my first PhD chapter! Oscillatory locomotion often requires deformation of materials that store and dissipate energy (i.e. tendons, apodemes, muscles). Most of the time, we think of these materials as exhibiting frequency-dependent behavior. (1/10)

@amtcastle @MattStultz Should be posted above. It is a little more time consuming than directly welding with a soldering iron. But allows for some pretty creative structures. Can also print on stretchable TPU. Just needs to be a thermoplastic sheet in a printers heated bed.

@MattStultz I seek your maker wisdom! The next design challenge for my Bioinspiration students is to build a protective yet flexible kneepad, inspired by pangolin armor. They can only use the laser cutter for this project, but may laminate layers to get overlapping scales...

@amtcastle @MattStultz Fun project! How about heat welding easily available thermoplastics like polycarbonate or TPU. We have done this using a soldering iron or even the hot end of a 3D printer. But I have seen direct welding of multiple layers using a laser cutter at low power. Some links to follow

So almost exactly one week after our daughter was born, I get this in my email. (On her due date nonetheless). It’s definitely been an eventful month! @EmoryUniversity has been a great place to grow as a person and as a scientist. Glad they decided to keep me around!

@N3OX Love the hand drawn charm. Reminds me of one of my favorite book series on dynamics. Abraham and Shaw. Book one has a Frank Zappa character inspecting an oscillating time series 😍
