🎤 New episode out now on all platforms- "Do Poles Improve Performance in Trail Running?" with Nicola Giovanelli, PhD (@nicgiovanelli) 📊In his study, Nicola concluded that athletes should use poles during steep uphill maximal efforts to obtain the best performance. In the study, 12 out of 15 participants were faster using the poles versus not using the poles in the 1.3 km vertical test. Conversely, during submaximal steep uphill walking, the use of poles does not necessarily provide advantages from a physiological point of view. In the submaximal condition, which simulated the intensity of a 6 hour ultra-trail race, there were no differences in physiological conditions (like oxygen consumption, heart rate, lactate) with poles versus without poles. From this data, and with a focus on physiological measurements, we can't say that poles are more useful or less useful in a longer race. 🧐However, we can't help but speculate that even if you're using the same amount of energy with the poles versus without, there may still be muscular or psychological benefits. How many times have we heard "I'm saving my legs with these poles" in a steep race? We know that when we use poles, we use less force in the legs and more force in our arms. There could be benefits to feeling fresher later on in the race, especially runnable, downhill sections. “Saving your legs” might actually not be too far off. 📚This leaves us encouraged and inspired to use technology and future research to explore whether the output from our arms pushing is saving energy or work in our legs. It could be a major research breakthrough for trail runners.

Three days after the first test (with poles - see previous tweet) Tiziano is back for the same protocol but without poles. Same VO2max but one step less (4.2 km/h - 62% --> ~2200 m/h vertical velocity)

@d23ward no, there is not. We have tried to find out a point a couple of years ago. It is personal preference, and athletes who can power walking efficiently seem to be only the ones who train a lot by power walking.
